Andy Carroll signs for West Ham

The Premiership - General Discussion

Postby aCe' » Sat Aug 20, 2011 3:27 pm

i thought he worked hard for the side... Our lack of width (whats with downing cutting inside AT EVERY FCKING CHANCE) combined with no buildup play through the center from Adam/Lucas meant he was always struggling to get on the end of decent opportunities... Had to come very deep more often than not to receive the ball because even the long balls werent beneficial because no one was there to benefit from the knock downs ..

Overall I'd say he had an okay game but nowhere near the level you'd expect from him... To be fair to the guy though, Kenny did him lno favors with the team selection

He had Downing playing support behind him instead of out wide. Hopefully when Gerrard is back Downing will remain wide left so we should see more of those types of balls Andy likes to get on the end of.

Great Post - attention all who hurl cheap shots at the lad.

Carrol is no Torres ,you can't throw the ball at him and expect him to overcome the defender running. He needs the width passes ,he needs buildup  ,he needs numbers joining him ,Today he was hang to dry.

The distance between midfield and Carrol just wasted everybody time ,espcially Andy which just got knocked all over with no hope for assistance.

You know, if we play Meireles and Suarez we will see the best of Andy

Agree with both of you.  Carroll wasn't getting any help from the ref, and I expect that because Vermaelen is a defender, but then when Vermaelen goes and climbs all over Agger in our end off a corner and there's no call?  That made me question how consistent Atkinson was going to be.

With Carroll in defenders know that if any of our players are trying to get it to him, it's going to be in the air.  If Suarez is in then defenders know we will try to get him a good pass with some space.  They can put a lot towards closing Carroll down by physically surrounding him, or they can try to close Suarez down by putting a lot of pressure on him at all times.  Usually, they can't do both.  Today if we had them both in Vermaelen would be done.  He'd have to choose one or the other and that'd be it.  You can say Jenkinson or Miguel or Sagna could go after the other, but clearly Vermaelan was the only Arsenal defender who had any control over either of them.  He picks Suarez, Carroll's free.  He picks Carroll, Suarez's free.

It seems Kenny's plan was to tire out Arsenal's already tired defense by giving them a handful with Carroll, then later bring on a crazed, hyped up and excited Suarez to run thru them, which is exactly what happened.  This won't always work, but for an Arsenal side who are very short on fit players and who played a midweek game against Udinese, that worked very well.

aCe, I also think the fee weighs down on the player.  I know that if I was bought for £35 million, I couldn't stop thinking about the fact that I need to prove I'm worth £35 million.  There is extra pressure on Carroll because he knows he will be known as one of the biggest flops in transfer history if he doesn't turn out as the player we all expected.

Yep agree. He can't seem to stand upright for very long either. Every challenge an Arsenal player made saw him hit the ground.

Suarez showed how ineffective he was in that line up. I don't see Carroll as the potential goal machine he is made out to be by some people.

I am not here to watch hoof ball to Andy.     :no

I agree with nearly everything you said.  Funny how we can fully agree with one player and have total opposite opinions on another  :p

It was a strange buy, wasn't a panic buy as he was injured when we got him, and the price did seem steep, but he fits into Kennys plans and once he gets going I'm sure he'll smash them in

Agree with this. Worked VERY VERY hard once again, I've been taken a back by his workrate and fitness to be honest, it's been very impressive. Kepp working the way he has been and it'll come for the lad. He did allright yesterday, unlucky not to put the 1st half header away and he held the ball up well for the most part. We are a little bit one-dimensinal when Suarez is missing from the side so I fully agree we will see the best of Carroll when little Luis is fit, firing and starting week in week out.

not worried in the slightest....

He's young, talentented and gives 100% every game.  I fully expect him to net 15 goals and assist with the same amount.

Not sure you could call it panic but I expect there was some  politics behind the transfer.
We had just lost our golden boy to a rival club and we needed to make a statement of intent.
The fact that he was injured and we had to pay over the odds as you at end of mid season transfer window was somewhat puzzling.

All water under bridge now though, im not convinced by him but I hope he does smash then in from all parts and shows he is worth every cent

I've read that Andy Carroll still isn't 100% fit and true he has looked sluggish.  But seriously, how can this be ?  Hes been back from injury since March and had a pre-season.
