Xabi alonso - Unbelievable... tribute thread!

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Sabre » Mon Oct 18, 2004 12:26 am

Hi, I've been lurking for some time.

I'm a Real Sociedad supporter, but Liverpool is my second team, since Liverpool caused awe in old Atocha stadium in the early eighties in the UEFA cup. Then John Aldridge (1) made us crazy, what a clever forward. And now Alonso's transfer has been a relief for our balance numbers :). Yep, I like Liverpool.

I've seen Alonso more than 40 games in the Spanish Primera Division at the Anoeta Stadium. For that matter, I can tell you he knows to perform well against organized midfields, since Primera Division is not a joke.

In 40 games I've seen him 33 bad games, or something. He was not only very young but a key player. He can do long passes that can be controlled easily by the receiver. Don't expect too many goals from him though, his best is definitely on passing, he can make things work like a clock.

I'm being pretty honest with this, I'd tell you that he's ****** if he was so, but I think that when the premier league season ends you'll have no doubts about his presence in the starting eleven.

Cheers!

(1) Aldo!

Welcome by the way  :)

Heh, Steven Gerrard is class. Anybody who pretend to know a bit about football should name him if it comes to talk about good midfielders.

Do I know a lot about him? well, you and I would agree that inside a stadium you can see things that cannot be seen watching the telly (movements, markings, gestures, runs), so I cannot say I know a *lot* about him. I also know he is good long ball pass player but I hope you won't be bothered if I claim that you'll like Alonso's as much as Gerrard's, if not this season, the next one. No need to mention, Gerrard is 30, it is a good idea to foresee and find a good replacement (if not better).

What would be the best partner? I haven't seen Hamman much lately (cannot see liverpool games often at spanish tv lately). In theory Alonso's best partner would be a player who do "underground" job, if you see what I mean, players who run a lot , steal balls, do not appear in the hilights but are appreciated by the people at Anfield (or any stadium) for their work.

Oh, and be optimistic about Deportivo, they are not the team they used to be, right now I'd put my money on Merseyside team

See you! and thank you for the welcome

Hello

Firstly, I'm sorry with my english. I'm also R.Sociedad supporter but Liverpool is one of my favorite team. In my opinion Xabi can play next to Gerrard with 4-4-2 system but one of two more advanced than the other. Xabi needs big spaces to play the ball. Although, I would like to mention that when the other team plays with 4-3-1-1 system, in my opinion Xabi and Gerrard need help to counteract the other team's superiority in the middle center.

see you.

yeah but if the other team plays 4-3-1-1 they've only got 10 men on the field. :D  :p  :D

if you prefer I can say 1-4-3-1-1, but the goalkeeper is obvious the first one. In "La Liga" you can say 4-4-2 doing reference to 1-4-4-2.

Did Aldo win over the Real Sociedad fans then?
i've always been unsure of this.

would you rather have had Ian Rush or stuck with John Aldridge?
its not the chilli sauce on kebabs that give you ring-sting, its the actual meat. had one without chilli, and still had ring-sting. the chilli's only there to mask the nonsense they stuff inside that bread.

Not only that, I think the people praised him unanimously. We had no sharp players that season, our only forward signed up for Bilbao, our archrivals, and then Aldo came. 14 goals in League with a dull team and a defensive 5-4-1 was something we simply were not used to, since the times we won the 2 leagues. Aldo made great header goals from bad crosses, was very clever in the area, we simply loved him! He was the second best scorer that season closely behind Madrid's Emilio Butragueño. And it's not the same to score goals for great teams like liverpool or more ****** ones like, say, Everton :), if you see what I mean
He brought us back to the UEFA cup after many years, that seems to me to be great for the first season in a foreign
country.

Second season was great too despite his famous (for us) missed penalty against Stuttgart in the UEFA quarter of finals. The other brit players we signed up though, didn't perform as we expected (Kevin Richardson, good midfielder but unlucky, Dalian Atkinson, bloody lazy bloke) since the first brit (or Irish )experience performed great.

What it is unclear to me, is why the heck he left and signed up Tranmere Rovers, the whole stadium was chanting his name when he left. Rumour has it that he had some differences with the president, since he wanted Andy Townsend to sign up Real Sociedad and the board didn't want to (or something), some other say, that his wife was unhappy at San Sebastian. Anyway, I just could not understand why he left to Tranmere Rovers, that was to underrate Aldo IMHO, he was veteran but definitely competent. He could have served well in a mid board premiere league team

See you, and thanks for being patient with my limited english!

Oh and Gerrard-Alonso would be a couple I'd like to see together

Oh and Ian Rush? this player was relevant as far as he sat down Aldo at Liverpool and made possible the signing up for Real Sociedad :) But I'd stick to Aldo, definitely.

Not every Brit player has performed well outside UK. Aldo did. Michael Owen? we'll see. He's talented, he's a worker unlike many Madrid's players, he's better than Raul at the moment, but Raul has a lot of influence in the team, and won't be easy to sat down him or Ronaldo. Call it insular or stupid patriotism, very traditional when it comes to talk about Real Madrid, in the other hand :)

i really didnt know Aldo was loved that much. to think he had to go to Tranmere is a travesty. he could have still been knockin the goals in at a top club. he's another wasted footballer in my opinion. like Robbie Fowler.

he should have been playin for a top club AND he should have played for England and he would be a legend by now.
