Andy Carroll signs for West Ham

The Premiership - General Discussion

The fee, after it's been paid is irrelevant.  It was a done deal that we would keep 15 million of whatever we got from the Torres sale and Newcastle would get the rest.  Done and dusted.

Torres left us on the last day of the transfer window with us having to overpay.  Simple.  It's water under the bridge at this point.

I don't think Carroll being in the side will hinder Suarez in any way.  I think the opposite actually.  I think Carroll will attract defenders and allow Suarez to find open areas of the final third to get the ball and do his magic.

As far as longballs being hoofed to him, that's not his fault, blame the defense or even the coaching for that.

I won't celebrate Rafa going........ but I will be over the moon if Dalglish comes in. League within 2 years if he gets the job, AND YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT.

Crespo was a 16mill deal with 2 players going the other way... nowhere near 36 mill or whatever..
Buffon was 32.6 according to all reports...
Regarding Aguero and Pastore, a quick look shows a pretty wide range of 'speculated' transfer fees.. given the recency of both transfers I guess its understandable... I do think that the pastore deal was higher than 35mill (probably by a million or so) but I'm not very sure that the Aguero one (35mill is the most likely fee imo)

Regardless, that price range puts him in pretty exclusive company and while many might not like the extra pressure that it puts the player under, its always going to be there and it remains a big factor in judging the player...

What we need to realize is that the side needed a lot of improvement  in the last 6 months or so. We had the money to spend and we more or less needed to get it right ... Taking big money gambles is one thing for a top club (Barcelona, Man Utd) but a totally different ball game for a club trying to reach the top... When we signed Henderson I had the same opinion I have today: we are in no position to be spending 20mill on players who have little more than potential to offer the side today... Luxury buys if you will.. We still arent good enough in several positions and given our transfers so far, we are likely to yet again miss out on a CL spot..

Thats why imo, Carroll and Henderson (combined 55mill or so) are under huge pressure to perform well from day1 or else the management will have failed to improve the side sufficiently given the large amount of money spent to do so...

Both players may very well improve in the future, but the main priority for Kenny and Co. in the transfer market imo should have been building a side strong enough to challenge for a top4 finish this season, and the title in the next couple of seasons...

Ultimately, this is what the transfer(s) will be judged on..

I think you are off the mark here.  Who are they under pressure from?  If it's the fans, They need to block that out and do their best as that is all they can offer.

If it's management, than that is management's fault for placing so much pressure on young players.

Mentally the fees are probably a big problem for the players though it shouldn't be since it's not their fault. As someone said earlier the best thing we could do is just to support them.

The fee irritates me though. :D

I dont think the fee paid for them bothers them at all. They never asked the club to pay whatever amount, the clubs agreed that themself. That is out of the players hands. Now the wages, yes, if they are considerably better, which they will be, then they may be under a bit of pressure, but not enough to make them perform any less.

Put simply, Kenny is the one under the most pressure regarding both deals.. Its huge money spent on 2 players who are yet to prove anything on the big stage..

The owners who are seemingly 100% behind Kenny will most certainly be expecting our big money signings to have an impact this season . I dont believe they would have sanctioned the deals if someone they didnt completely trust was in charge. As such, if the players dont perform then Kenny will be the one having to answer questions.

Actually I think Comolli is under the most pressure as Director of Football or whatever the title is.  He's kind of a parachute for Kenny.

Forgot to mention, these owners are more inclined to ask the questions you mention 2-3-4 years down the line as opposed to at the end of this season.  Again, Patience.

I expect Carroll will get a lot of stick for this performance but only some of it will be deserved.  He was basically up top on his own and one on one with a very good defender in Vermailen.  Anything on the deck Vermailen is favourite to win and he's also strong in the air.  I think he got a helping hand from the ref on a few headers (climbing all over Carroll) but I also think Carroll let himself get out-muscled a few times.  I would have preferred not to start Henderson and have Suarez in support of Carroll.  It would have been interesting to see how Vermeilen handled that pairing...particularly with an 18 year old defense partner for most of the match.  I'm confident Carroll would have kept their MOM busy and Suarez would have ripped them to shreds.

A few times he even got out muscled by that Miguel kid. Some careless touches too at times. It's still early days yet but yes I would also prefer to start WITH Suarez.

I really think that his game was hurt by Henderson and Downing's lack of determination to go forward and be adventures. Thought there was another really weak call on him for putting his forearm in the defender's back. Both times the whistle blew and we would have scored each time. Would have like to see him play with Suarez a little bit. Bolton at home next week, lets see what he can do.

You know, if we play Meireles and Suarez we will see the best of Andy

Bob is right, a lot of the time he gets little to no help when crosses come in, no one else gets into the box for them and he's literally alone against two CBs.  He wore them out though I think and Suarez benefited from that when he came on.
