Flanno or kelly? - For the right back spot

I'd definitely start introducing Kelly into the CB position this season, Kelly and Agger would be ideal.

Flanno for RB.

Having just signed a new contract Johnson will be the 1st choice RB, Flannigan will offer cover and Kelly will be used as a CB.

Unless we fail to decure a decent LB then Johnson may be used as cover there with Kelly becoming 1st choice RB.

The alternative is Johnson plays a more advanced RM role. KK has many options available to him now and good options at that

ya agreeing with most on switching Kelly to CB, i used to remember Carra
playing RB, LB , DM and then finally settling down as CB.
and he turned out to be a damn fine defender.
the difference is Kelly will be even better.

so Kelly shld be first choice RB, Flanno as backup.
so do we really need a LB? if we can convince Johnson to play out of
position for a yr or 2, and Robbo as his back up LB, i think we r pretty good.

I agree and don't see the big panic to sign defenders.

Come on lads Johnson is the best right back we have by a country mile. Kelly really is more of a CB all day long and given the chance to develop will grow into something awesome. I see Kelly being used in both positions and Flanno covering right back if Johnson is out and Kelly moves to the middle.

I'd choose Kelly.  Kelly is really good going forward and he's really quick.  Flanno doesn't exactly offer that yet and I'd prefer to see him get some more experience before becoming a starter.  I'd probably want Kelly to start, but then in 1 or 2 years have him switch to CB and then start playing Flanno at RB.

Since we have Johnson tho, I'd prefer Kelly back up then CB's, especially now considering he's better than soto, Carra and Agger would start but Agger will get hurt so Carra and Skrtel will start and behind those 3 I'd say Kelly's the next best thing we've got.

Just wondered where people stood on this one right now? If the season started tomorrow I would start Flanno at Right-Back. Kelly (for me) has looked a little slow on the turn and not as agile as I remember him from last season and I wonder if he needs more time (from a fitness perspective) to get back to the level he showed last year + I can't understand why he hasn't been tried at CB. Jonno has only been back for one game and looked like he needed a few more to get into any sort of match shape.

Yeah Flanno is probably the fitter of the two at the moment.
Kelly missed a month or two at the end of last season and still seems a bit off the pace.

I think Kelly did play CB against Galatasaray and we got destroyed.

He looks to have beefed up a fair bit to me.

As it stands I'd put Flanagan slightly ahead of him. What the kid may lack in ability he certainly makes up for in tenacity. I love his attitude and he'll learn from the few times he was given a bit of a hard time last season.

Johnson will start against Sunderland though, unless the Enrique deal hasn't gone through in which cae he'll play left back with Flanagan at right back.

I'd like to see Flanno at RB (love the lads attitude) AND Johnson at RM . Between the pair of them defensively we'd have a pretty sold right flank and Johnson has always looked more than handy going forward.

Before you all go  :wwww , it wouldn't be the first time we've changed a players recognised role to good effect, e.g. Ray Kennedy decent Striker became an immense Midfielder, Carragher decent FB became a brilliant CB.

They jury's still out on whether Kuyts change of role was in fact a good decision  :D

i agree woof ,johnson would make an excellent winger.
great pace, strong, can cross and isnt bad at cutting inside either and with flanno supporting him will provide him the freedom he needs.
id much rather johnson on the wing than kuyt.

back on topic.
id have flanno at rb over kelly as flanno is more agile and composed with the ball where as kelly looks a little rigid and is too heavy to be flat out up and down the field for 90 mins and is more suited to CB.
both have shown the ability for the role but flanno shades it imo.

Its a no brainer for me. Its got to be neither of those two, when we have Englands right back at the club. We need to play our players in their best positions. Johnson at RB, and if fit Aurelio at left.

If Johnson stays fit and we sign a left back then can't see Flannagan or Kelly getting an extended run in the side.

It may be worth loaning one of them out for the season to be honest, probably Flannagan as Kelly could offer cover at centre back if we're struggling.

Is Johnson really our best RB? I doubt it...On Paper of course, Quick ,good technic and skills but in reality not stable ,not that smart, lacks confidence and composure. I would sell him if we had the chance. Might be good as a winger but as a defender a total liablity.

Flano at this stage looks the right lad for the job.

To be fair Kelly had by far his best pre-season game yesterday, he looked very sharp and more like the player we saw last season.
