The summer Sale in 2002 was a pivotal moment for GH. After making the CL Quarter Finals and finishing 2nd in the Prem he goes out and buys Diouff, Daio and Cheyrou for near £20 milion.......the rest is history

Never thought of it that way, but that is definteley where he totally lost it. But the indications were there prior to that.
Far too many £3m/£4m purchases with 'potential' when the odd proven 'galactico' at £20m would not have gone amiss.

the main thing that annoyed me about that is that the money could have been used to purchase damian duff and nicholas anelka.

Not sure about the Anelka bit. But I sure as hell agree with the sentiment, one or two top class puchases would have made all the difference.

anelka's class. to score over twenty goals in a team which finished in the bottom 5 last season was exceptional. people are too quick just jump on his "mood swings" and assume he's like that all the time. personally, i couldn't give a monkeys as long as he did the business.

There is absolutely no doubt about the lad's ability or class. But he seems to carry a lot of disruptive baggage and the dangerous bit is his effect on the other players and team spirit.
Can't disagree with the sentiment though !
