Andy Carroll get England U21s call
Arsenal's Jack Wilshere and Liverpool striker Andy Carroll have been included in England's provisional squad for the Under-21 European Championships.

The duo are among six players capped at senior level in a 40-man squad named by manager Stuart Pearce for the finals in Denmark in June.

The 40-man squad will be reduced to 23 by 1 June.

England begin their Under-21 Championship campaign against Spain on 8 June.

Wilshere's inclusion in the provisional squad is likely to irritate Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who last month quiered the midfielder's involvement in the tournament now he has forced his way into Fabio Capello's full England squad.

The Frenchman said last month: "If England think Wilshere is not ready to play for the first team completely and he needs to play in the under-21s, that you can defend.

"If they are convinced he is a first team player, then it is debatable."

The Professional Footballers' Association's 2011 young player of the year has made four full caps since his international debut in August last year.

Meanwhile, Liverpool's record £35m signing Carroll said he is keen to play a key role for Pearce's team during the summer.

The 22-year-old, who scored his first full international goal for England against Ghana in the 1-1 draw last month, said in March: "It can only be good for my career.

"If you look at the Germans, when they won the Under-21 tournament, they went to the World Cup and had such a good tournament.

"It's important to start winning international tournaments early and hopefully you can take it to the world stage."

As well as Wilshere and Carroll, four other players have been selected by Fabio Capello for the senior squad.

Danny Welbeck, Jordan Henderson, Micah Richards and Kieran Gibbs all have international caps while Chris Smalling and Kyle Walker have trained with the full squad.

Pearce was in charge when England suffered a 4-0 defeat by a Mesut Ozil-inspired Germany in the 2009 European Championships final in Sweden.

As well as Spain, England face Ukraine and the Czech Republic in the group matches, with the top two progressing to the semi-finals.

The final takes place on 25 June.

England Under-21s provisional squad: Fielding (Blackburn), Loach (Watford), Steele (Middlesbrough), McCarthy (Reading), Bennett (Middlesbrough), Bertrand (Chelsea), Gibbs (Arsenal), Jones (Blackburn), Mancienne (Chelsea), Mee (Manchester City), Naughton (Tottenham), Richards (Manchester City), Smalling (Manchester United), Tomkins (West Ham), Trippier (Manchester City), Walker (Tottenham), Albrighton (Aston Villa), Cork (Chelsea), Cleverley (Manchester United), Davies (Bolton), Hammill (Wolves), Henderson (Sunderland), Howson (Leeds), Lallana (Southampton), Lansbury (Arsenal), McEachran (Chelsea), Muamba (Bolton), Rodwell (Everton), Rose (Tottenham), Sinclair (Swansea), Wilshere (Arsenal), Carroll (Liverpool), Delfouneso (Aston Villa), Hooper (Celtic), Rodriguez (Burnley), Sears (West Ham), Sturridge (Chelsea), Vaughan (Everton), Welbeck (Manchester United), Wickham (Ipswich)

i am not to happy with that in truth, i think he could have done with having the summer off and then start pre season with us fresh.

*sigh* after all the Gerrard shabite last season we should have told them where to go. Carroll's only just coming back from injury, it ain't gonna help his recovery. Isn't Suarez going away as well?

silver lining - might be good to get Carroll a few minutes and get a run around - just this tourney might be a bit much thats all. When's he due to return?

Suarez is late July isn't he?

Just read the end of the article, 25th June, not TOO bad then - judging by the quality of the side listed there, I expect to see him at Melwood on the 15th  :D

I think it could be a good thing if he avoids injury and England do well.  He'll come back looking forward to continue playing and in much better shape.  He's still not even 100% yet and it would be a setback if he just gets there in these last few games only to go back to not playing for an extended period of time.  Hopefully he comes back injury free and ready to go for next season.

i'm surprised that there's only one Liverpool player in there. what about Kelly, Flanagan and Robinson? at least they've had minutes with the first team unlike most of them there. one of our former players is in it though. would love to see Wickham and Albrighton join us.

I might be going against the grain here BUT ( :D ) I'm not convinced by Caroll.

Must admit I never followed him when he played for Newcastle and have had little opportunity to gauge his ability when playing in a red shirt, however on the little I've seen he looks (to me at least) like a bit of a lump. No pace, disappointing movement and a first touch that makes even the likes of Kuyt look like Maradonna.

Sorry lads, I know he's returning from a long lay off so you can slay me when the fella comes good but so far his performances haven't even hinted that even in the long term he's worth the money we paid for him .

you're not alone! :D i've been having the same thoughts as well. he doesn't seem very mobile and has a heavy touch. i wouldn't compare him to Kuyt but he does remind me of a slower version of Stan Collymore.

He does look slow Woof and it's a slight concern but its his presence that makes the difference, he at least has that to the lead the line. The Geordies reckon we have the next Shearer, half and Alan Shearer would be great as far as I'm concerned.

Next season will certainly be the indicator

Woof I say hold your judgment until we get in some decent wingers for next season.

Fair enough Tubbs, it is early days.

I've been hoping for a rebirth of the Toshack (Caroll) / Keegan (Suarez) combo and maybe I've been expecting too much too soon but so far we may as well have played a lamp post to bouce balls off for Suarez to run onto.

:D

I don't think he will be a 25 goal a season man for us, but I think he will get maybe 16-20 and have a hand in a fair few assists. With his presence he can hold the ball up for us and bring in people like Suarez and Kuyt into play. I thought he looked alright against City. But he also seems like the type to have a good game followed by a shocker.

he has't had himslf a run of games yet, just needs a bit of time. I think he's a nailed on success. I agree with you though Bav, I don't think he's 20 a season either
