The great anfield summer clearout - Should they stay or should they go?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Don't get carried away on how much money will be available in the summer, to repost another post I made in another thread -

Only you have to put the word "big" into context as come the transfer window and UEFA's financial fair play rules come into effect.

Essentially in this environment £40m will be as big as it gets.

Edit: £40m net spend I mean. Obviously if we recoup on player sales the total spend could be higher.

A first choice CB, a decent LB and a quality winger for either side would be incredible work, and probably more than we should expect, especially if our hands are full replacing Reina in summer. Hopefully he'll see the signs and stay around.

I think priority is (in order): Left Wing, Left Back, Right Wing and Defensive Midfielder.

Hence my earlier post of Adam Johnson, Taye Taiwo, Ashley Young and Yann M’Villa. I like the idea of starting with Young on the right and Adam Johnson on the left to give us that width we've been missing. In games where this is not working, get them to switch wings meaning they will cut inside more hopefully freeing up space for Glen Johnson (or Kelly) and Taiwo to overlap more.

I think we can get by next year with our current centre-backs.

Any Thoughts?

I think we can get by next year with a lot of our current players/centre backs/midfielders/full backs/wide men.

We do need to improve the squad and I expect we will. I just hope to see real quality come in to one or two positions - anything else will be a bonus in my eyes - I think it takes time to build a squad and so I'd like to see stability retained while we add quality, rather than a brand new team that'll need time to gell.

So if we don't get a CB, but we do get a real quality DM and winger, perhaps someone cheap for LB, then I could live with that. I guess it is the quality rather than number of new players I'm looking at.

I agree, this is what I was trying to suggest.

I would love a new strong centre-back and another good striker ideally but for next season I think Carragher, Agger, Skrtel, Wilson and Ayala could cover us. Also Suarez, Carrol, Kuyt and Pacheco can cover us up front. You may realise that I am happy for Soto and Ngog to go.

The areas we desperatly need are as I said earlier; and the players I mentioned would significantly improve our 1st team. With Taiwo on a free I think we could sign the other 3 for under 40 million

I just watched Koncheskey play for Forest against Swansea...

Even the championship teams tear him apart, they went straight through him every time.  I hope we can get anything for him at this point.

I'm not sure that a Man City reject like Adam Johnson is who we should be going for. Surely we are better than having to buy a player who they want to get rid of? It's the same with the speculation over Malouda who looks over the hill to be honest. Ashley Young is a quality player but City rejects are a no no and I include Micah Richards in that category.

That is the thing SCS, I think getting rid of the dead wood would generate around 15-20m, plus a transfer budget which is around 30 - 35m.

I would like to see the revenues we generated last year, maybe 30-35m is will be our transfer budget this season + the player sales of 15-20m, so ideally we would have aprox 55m to spend!

Man City rejects??? The Fact City got a NumbNut for a manager is just what we need. Adam Johnson would be a great signing ,so would Richards and Malouda..Players leave teams for lots of reason if we can benefit from a miserable mananger as manchini so be it.

Bringing in Johnson and Richards would be awesome but the only chance we would get of grabbing them would be for greatly inflated fee and if there was to be some unrest with the manager.

I honestly can't see Man City selling though as they don't need to sell...at any costs. It's all good and well the players maybe putting in transfer requests but Man City could turn round and tell them to stick it and let them rot in the reserves!!

Who would you prefer

Maxi or Adam Johnson

Cole or Malouda

Skrtel or Micah Richards

Maxi and Johnson

No to Cole, Malouda, Skrtel and Richards

One small problem with Johnson has been his off-field discipline and work ethic. This is where Mancini wants him to grow up quickly.

What about loaning Johnson to try him out? A player like him would most likely cut into the first team pretty quick.

A permanent move Ashley Young would be my first preference though, if that was possible.

what do you see in Maxi? he's been largely anonymous in most matches he played.

I dont get this Ashley Young speculation, he had a purple patch about 3 years ago culminating in him having a good game at woodison after which MON said he was world class (to much amusement from the pundits in the studio at the time). I havnt seen him do anything since?

He has 58 assists in the last 5 seasons which for me prove he is very consistent at what he does, he also scores goals.

He gives us something we don't have in the wide areas and that is pace, creativity, crossing ability of high quality, he can beat a man, he can hug the touchline and deliver from the byline and also deliver quality balls without having to beat a man, he can also play like an old out & out winger or a modern day wingman.

He's a low risk signing for me and will hit the ground running rather than signing some continental player that may take 6 months just to adapt to the physicality and pace of the Premier League.
