With money and finances of paramount importance in the modern game, has Parry c@cked up big style, with the sidestep of this film project by lifelong Liverpool fan Jeffries.
I was under the impression that Liverpool and Manchester United had been snubbed by the film makers so I was surprised to hear recently that we actually turned down the offer which would have given our brand a massive global push with little effort needed on our part. It is claimed that Rick Parry didn't fancy the idea so Newcastle United were eventually chosen - no Liverpool supporting film mogul would work with the Mancs after all would they!
Jefferies is keen to help the club he's supported since a boy
Goal! will actually be the biggest movie in the third quarter of 2005, on literally thousands of screens worldwide. It's a $100m project which already has nearly $200m of advertising support behind just the first movie. The FA and Premier League are behind it and FIFA will be marketing it in 204 countries as will companies like Coke, adidas, Yahoo, McDonalds, Philips and other bodies like the MLS.
Every football ground in every country in the world will have Goal! signage for 1 month before it's released and it will be on every Coke can, in every sports shop window, every football magazine, newspaper, billboards, cinema etc for months beforehand. Think blanket marketing like Lord of The Rings but with the Toon 'bar-codes' (and not LFC) enjoying exposure en masse everywhere in the world.
The second film will be even bigger which will be filmed in Madrid with Real Madrid as well as AC Milan in full co-operation with UEFA who will be marketing it massively too. The third film will be filmed at the next World Cup with the full endorsement, support, marketing and co-operation of FIFA.
I cannot believe that we side-stepped this opportunity of promoting our brand without having to spend a penny.
