Kenny Dalglish hails Glen Johnson and Martin Kelly's impact for Liverpool FC
by Luke Traynor, Liverpool Echo
Jan 25 2011
KENNY DALGLISH has hailed two defenders who he believes have solved Liverpool’s full-back dilemma.

The Scot singled out Martin Kelly and Glen Johnson ahead of the Reds’ home game against Fulham tomorrow night.

The 20-year-old’s form has meant the England international has been switched to the left side to accommodate the youngster.

But both players continued their good recent displays during Liverpool’s comfortable 3-0 win against Wolves on Saturday.

And Dalglish said: “Martin’s done very well. He’s like a new signing for the club because that’s four on the spin he’s played now.

"He’s earned it and it doesn’t matter what age you are, if you are performing you’ll have a chance of playing.

“He’s certainly deserved his opportunities. It is impressive when you come into a team that isn’t playing as well as it can and you play as well as he has done.”
The caretaker boss has also been impressed with Johnson’s attitude after instructing him to occupy an unfamiliar position.

The Scot said: “Glen has been fantastic in the left-back position in the past three games. I don’t recall anyone going past him.

“He was also involved in the first goal against Everton and was involved more defensively on Saturday. He did really well.

“For me, playing at left-back, he’s doing us a favour. It’s not really his chosen position. But he hasn’t said a word against it, he’s just gone out and played.

“That’s great and I think it just reflects his commitment and his attitude.”

Liverpool face Mark Hughes’ side at Anfield hoping to make up for lost ground in the Premier League.

They stand nine points off European qualification after leapfrogging to 11th position following the Molineux victory.

Steven Gerrard returns after his three-match ban and will be hoping to forge a midfield partnership with the burgeoning Raul Meireles.
Dalglish is hoping this rearranged fixture against the Londoners will prolong the feelgood factor which has returned since Roy Hodgson’s exit.

But he has warned his players to not let the elation of Liverpool’s second league away win of the season overshadow the reality of the Reds’ current predicament.

He said: “A lot of people who came to the game on Saturday were a wee bit apprehensive with the results in the past away from home, and there were millions of Liverpool fans with a huge smile on their face on Saturday, after the game. But by the way, so did the players.

“Every game is different, because we’ve won one game we’re not going to be carried away, we have to repeat it.”

Dalglish was happy to see Fernando Torres score two regulation tap-ins against the Black Country side, rather than a wonder strike.

He said: “Sometimes Fernando might have to do it on his own, but he was involved in the build-up for the first one, he’s laid it to Christian (Poulsen) who’s laid a great ball in for Raul, and he’s reacted quickly to get back in the box.

“The boys might be able to make some goals for Fernando, but Fernando can also do it himself.”

I have to admit I think putting Johnson at LB has been a masterstroke by the Gaffer ,and he has certainly made me alter my earlier reservations about the lads overall competence as a defender .....also I am particularly pleased to hear this " it doesn’t matter what age you are, if you are performing you’ll have a chance of playing." .....simple enough words of encouragement that will have the Kids playing out of their skin for a chance to make the squad  :)

KK has been a great manager for Lvp. Look at what he had achieved in his first tenure here, the silverware won speaks for itself. He achieved the double in his 1st season as player manager with no previous managerial experience at 35. Now that is a baby for a manager as he recently said. However, I believe he was very much like a child prodigy manager. Child prodigies shine early and sad to say, usually set early. And set early he did when he suddenly quit the job at age 40 and retired from football management at 50 which is still not old for a manager. I still don't know why he quit the Blackburn manager post after straight winning the league with them in 94/95. That's why I have some reservations about whether he is a long term solution or not.

He certainly is better than Hodgson and to appoint him to be caretaker manager till end of the season was the smartest move. Whether he will succeed in getting Lvp to move northwards in the table/not and whether he will want to continue or will be offered to continue after May, only time will tell.

This is Kenny in 2011, not 1991. So I wouldn't know whether he can get us to win the league again if given the chance to continue. Remember Howard Kendall, he was a success at his first tenure and he was re-appointed as Everton manager countless times but flop each time. I hope the same will not happen to our brother Kenny.

read a report that Kenny used to drive Fowler home, housed Jamie Redknapp when he first moved to LFC.
recently he also drove Suso home.
he is a manager genuine in the development of youth which i dont see in any other foreign managers.
he placed his faith in Kelly and Jojo, altho' i still cant see any thing special in jojo.
Kenny is the manager for the long term and i see him blooding in more home-growth players in the future.
I await the next Fowler, Gerrard and Carra.

Liverpool FC boss Kenny Dalglish: Let’s rekindle fortress Anfield
by Luke Traynor, Liverpool Echo
Jan 26 2011

KENNY DALGLISH wants his players to rekindle Anfield’s reputation as a fortress in Liverpool’s bid to march up the Premier League.

The Reds line up against Fulham tonight desperate to record a second straight win under caretaker boss Kenny Dalglish.

And with a home fixture against Stoke next week, the Scot has called on his players to harness the atmosphere inside the stadium to their advantage.

Dalglish said: “We’re very proud and privileged with what’s happened at Anfield, and we want to be part of the history and tradition going forward.

“We want to continue with the same principles and philosophies about the football club, whether it’s atmosphere within the stadium, or what we do on the pitch.”

With just six league wins at home so far this season, Anfield has not been the traditionally safe haven of previous years.

But Dalglish is mindful of the galvanising effect a packed Anfield can have on Liverpool and is urging his side to revel in that support.

He added: “We want to be helpful to the punters, and sometimes they’ve got to be helpful with us.
We’ll stand aside each other and hopefully move the club forward. They’re as equally important to the club as what the players are, because we can all help push the club forward and upwards. Anfield is a fantastic place to go and play, and we should all look forward to it and not be afraid of it.”

Apart from Jamie Carragher who is out with a dislocated shoulder, Liverpool could be at full strength tonight.

Steven Gerrard returns after suspension with Christian Poulsen, who impressed Dalglish on Saturday at Wolves, likely to drop to the bench.

Left-back Paul Konchesky has a minor Achilles concern while Lucas Leiva, who was yesterday named in the Brazil squad to play France next month, should be available after sustaining a slight thigh strain at Molineux.

Milan Jovanovic was withdrawn from the squad to face Wolves through illness, but is expected to fit.

Reports the Serbian striker was subject to a £6m bid from German side Wolfsburg are thought to be wide of the mark.

Deals for Liverpool’s two major transfer targets, Blackpool’s Charlie Adam and Ajax’s Uruguyan striker Luis Suarez still appear some way off.

Offers of £4m and £12.75m respectively have been dismissed by both clubs with director of football strategy Damien Comolli and Dalglish now musing over improved bids.

And any swoop for Wigan’s Charles N’Zogbia looks fraught with difficulty with Latics boss Roberto Martinez scoffing at rumours linking the wide man with Liverpool.

"harness the atmosphere inside the stadium " I like the sound of that :D

Alan Green: Kenny Dalglish will make a write fool of his media begrudgers
Wednesday, 26 January 2011

The other Sunday I sat in the Spurs press room prior to their game against Manchester United. One of the early kick-offs, the Merseyside derby, was being shown on the various television monitors.

I couldn’t help but notice that Raul Meireles’ goal for Liverpool was greeted in silence whereas the two Everton strikes early in the second half, after which I had to leave to get to the commentary position, provoked roars of approval. To quote the late Rafa Benitez, that is a “fact”.

Many of the country’s football correspondents were at White Hart Lane — it was easily the biggest game of the day — most with no connection whatsoever to Merseyside. Are they really ‘anti-Liverpool’ or, for whatever reason, are they against the ‘second coming’ of Kenny Dalglish and hoping it will fail? I may be entirely wrong but that’s how it seemed.

Too stout a defence has been made by too many regarding the Roy Hodgson regime. Too much was made of Dalglish failing to win any of his first three games: after all, two were away from home, a Hodgson ‘forte’, and the other was the Everton battle. Anyhow, it now looks as if many may be disappointed.

Liverpool will not win the title. They will not qualify for the Champions League. It’s unlikely they’ll make the Europa League unless they win this season’s competition. However, if I correctly lip-read Sammy Lee as he turned to Dalglish after Torres scored Liverpool’s third at Molineux, I agree: “We’re back!” he screamed.

Wolves’ Stephen Ward, who scored the only goal when the sides met just after Christmas, said: “Things change when a new manager comes in and credit to Liverpool, they’ve come down here (where Chelsea and Manchester City both lost) and been a lot better than when we won at Anfield.” Too right.

Saturday’s was only Liverpool’s third away win in 21 games but it was a huge improvement on anything seen under Hodgson. Dalglish has totally changed the atmosphere with a return to the playing style the club’s supporters have longed for: ‘the Liverpool way’.

Yes, Fernando Torres was a lone striker but he ‘felt’ far from alone given the willingness of others, particularly the outstanding Meireles, to rush forward in support. This was a revived Liverpool, a wholly positive Liverpool, casting off the negativity of the previous manager.

It’s still a long way forward. The return of Steven Gerrard after suspension tomorrow night against Fulham poses the question as to where Meireles will play. Why not play the skipper deeper and allow the Portuguese international to flourish in that role at the centre of the three behind Torres?

And where, if Ian Holloway isn’t affronted by another “disgraceful” bid — I gather Blackpool are being offered at least eight times what they paid for the player — would Charlie Adam fit in?

Surely the priorities lie elsewhere? They need a left back, probably Stephen Warnock, initially on loan, and a really good central defender alongside Daniel Agger. That may have to wait till the summer. Above all, it is essential Dalglish signs a quality striker. That’s why Damien Camolli is in Amsterdam in pursuit of Luis Suarez.

But, rest assured, especially certain correspondents, Liverpool are on the up.

Thought this was a good article that needed sharing ........Well said Mr Green .

Alan Green tells it as it is - and as most of us have known, the media has for years been against Liverpool, the height being when Rafa was in charge and did not take their nonsense.

In Kenny the media are actually afraid of him and can't dis him and the aura of respect and invislbility is returnin at this level too.
