Damien Comolli sent to seal a deal for Suárez

Liverpool’s determination to make a marquee signing during the January transfer window will see Damien Comolli dispatched to Amsterdam for talks with Ajax over a deal for Luis Suárez.

Liverpool’s interest in the Uruguay forward has been thwarted by Ajax’s £21 million valuation of a player who turns 24 today. Comolli, Liverpool’s director of football strategy, is not willing to pay more than £18 million in a deal that would also see Ryan Babel, the Liverpool forward, return to his former club as a makeweight, and will attempt to compromise.

The outcome of the talks is likely to hinge on Ajax’s determination to hold on to a player who has spoken publicly of his desire to move to England, with Liverpool his preferred destination.

“When I see the way that [Carlos] Tévez plays there I think I can be a big name in England,” Suárez said.

Frank De Boer, the Ajax coach, is not keen to sanction the sale after agreeing with Rick van den Boog, the club’s managing director, that it will not proceed unless financial requirements are satisfied and a replacement lined up.

“We won’t let Luis go on 31st January at 23.55pm,” De Boer said. “It is logical and a deal that I have made with Rick van den Boog. To replace Suárez will be difficult but we are ready to have a plan B, we know what we want if he leaves.”

It is understood that Ajax have identified Bas Dost, the Heerenveen forward, as a potential replacement.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool’s owner, is prepared to fund a recruitment drive, but its determination has been met only with resistance from rival clubs with Blackpool adopting a similar stance to Ajax by pricing Charlie Adam, the midfield player, at a higher level than Liverpool are ready to pay.

Liverpool had a £4million bid for the Blackpool captain rejected on Friday and Ian Holloway, the Blackpool manager, has again made it clear that Adam will not be sold this month unless they return with a “drastically” improved offer. Liverpool will make a second bid of £5 million but that also seems likely to be turned down.

“I do not care if mighty Liverpool have made a bid for my best player Charlie Adam,” Holloway. “If they don’t improve it drastically or put a ‘1’ in front of it, they can go and whistle. They have offered £4 million, which is a disgrace. We’ve had three bids for him so far, from clubs that are round and about us in the league, but I’d suggest that rather than waste my time, or try and unsettle my club, they offer me a real amount of money.

“Life is about timing and this isn’t the right time. He will stay with us because the figures being bandied around are insulting. We will get £46 million if we stay up so why get rid of Charlie now for a good deal less than that?”

yeah, but they're not going to sell their best player for 4 million.

Sounds like we mean business with Suarez. I just hope we if we do end up not buying him that it's not because we were not willing to go an extra 5 or 6 Mil. tbh I think 21Million is a fair sum for him but fair enough if FSG want to try and spend a bit less. Hopefully Ryan can be used as a makeweight to speed things up.

I think Ajax still want 25M for Suárez , but at 25M for both Ashley Young and Marc Albrighton both of them will solve our winger problem ...

i reckon we will pay around £6mil for adam with maybe an add on if he is a success here.maybe give him someone on loan also.entering the last week now and if we bid 6 mil i reckon tuesday will be adams last game for blackpool. rumours circulating that he wants to join us and doesent understand how blackpool can turn down 12 times what they paid for him.fingers crossed its true.

I agree that he would be worth more as well... but I've heard so many numbers that they allegedly want.  I've heard they want 18, 21, 23, 25 and 30 euros, which I don't know the conversion of.  If they want 21, we should offer 15 and Babel.  if they underrate Babel then we sell to Hoffenheim and pay the 21. I think it's a fair valuation.  I wouldn't mind first offering 13 and Babel and see but I'd be fine with us paying 21 for him.  I'm glad we don't automatically give in to what they want or we would turn into City or Chelsea.  They set their sights on a player so their manager automatically slaps a price tag of over 30 million on them.  They aren't quiet about their transfers and yet they are resolved in a couple days because they instantly give in.

If they want 25, I'd say offer maybe 17 and Babel.  Make them be willing to sacrifice as well.  An unhappy player will do nothing for them but under-perform and essentially lower his value and somebody would end up picking him up for 12 in the summer, so I'm sure they are willing to drop the price tag a couple million.  They aren't stupid.  Players who have wanted to go have almost always gone and when they haven't, it's easy to see the lack of professionalism in their game soon afterwords.  Sure they occasionally hit their old form, but by the time that happens, the next transfer window is coming round and they lose focus again.

please please suarez dont come

look at his goals, saurez is an out an out striker, not a wide man

if you get saurez you gotta play 442......you cant play 442 with kuyt and maxi as wide men, they aint good enough.

then our centre will be loads weaker too

id rather get ashley young for 18 million and maybe another wide man, rather than a player which will mean we have to play 442, with the wrong players

That's why Kenny is the gaffer and not little homo!

Kenny won't be half as rigid with the team. The players will be allowed to press and defend at the right times. A fluid frontline and breakers from midfield at different times makes it much harder for teams to set up against us.

ok so lets say suarez comes and our forward 6 is

kuyt....gerrard.....morieles......maxi

........torres.......suarez

means gerrard has to playing holding mid.....the rest dont have enough tricks, flair, creativity, guile and pace to supply two great strikers and plus you then lose gerrard as a great attacking midfield goalscorer

would be pointless, like when we played 442 with hodgson
