Speaking of Darren Bent, I am shocked that i) he's handed in a transfer request, ii) Villa have bid so much for him (£18m rising to £24m according to sky). His goalscoring record is very admirable but he is no Fernando Torres and needs to be at a club where he'll be the main striker, which of course he would be at Villa. But he was doing just fine at Sunderland, so why move to Villa? Although traditionally a bigger club, they're in the bottom three and you can't see them achieving that much more than Sunderland in the foreseeable future.

we should have gone for Bent a long time ago..years ago, it was clear to see he was a good player and we had our chance to buy him but did not take it.

is he left footed jarvis ?
Always looks a decent player when i have seen him and i am sure would be cheaper than Downing.

Dont rate down at all really, hes decent but he would cost a bomb and there is a lot better out there, im not a huge Ashley Young fan either but at least he is an improvement on what we have and can carry the ball at pace, which is something we desperatly lack as a squad.

Young yes Downing no. If we do actually take Downing its the long route for us, make small imrpovements here and there, tweak the squad and build it up slow. I prefer the more direct road, top class straight in there but its a question of whether we have the funds or can actually attract the big hitters at this point.

There are two distinct agendas here..

1. The "get us out of a hole" agenda.
2. The "build for the future" agenda.

Downing falls somewhere between 1 and 2 but nearer 2 in my opinion. Van Bommel will certainly be a number 2!  :Oo:

Downing is a ok squad player, nothing more. He can provide width though and we need that so sure he could be useful but 16 mill is too much.

I agree.  he scores a decent amount but half of them are pens and he misses a lot of pens as well.  That one game, can't remember who they played, but they had 3 pens and bent made one and missed two.  That's pathetic.  He gets a lot of tap in goals as well.  Kind of like Rooney last year.  Sure he scores a lot but three-fourths are either pens or balls rolled to him with an empty net 6 yards out.  Goals that anybody would put away basically.  I think Capello has seen this as well and that's why he basically never gets called up to England.

I would much prefer Suarez as well.  Heck, I'd much prefer Van Wolfswinkle than bent.

I dont remember Ian Rush scoring many spectacular goals in his prime and look where he got us to.. I am not a fan of Darren Bent, but do we have the players to finish off those so-called easy tap-ins at the moment right now??? Do we? Does Bent need to get used to the hustle and bustle of the EPL compared to Suarez and that Wolfwinkle fella?? And regarding Downing, I think he will be great for us. Firstly, he is a natural left footer which our team lacks, provides width on the left.. Great delivery on set pieces which we sorely missed. Guys, how many times you seen us score from corner kicks and free kicks?

We need to improve little by little and be realistic here. We cant play fantasy football with the likes of Man City and Chelsea and buy the Dzekos and Balotellis for 30 million and "See how it goes".
I will be delighted if we can get downing and ashley young together. Once we can provide proper threat on the width, set pieces and pace on the attack, we will be hard to beat again.

One more thing... After watching the merseyside derby.. Our defending is appalling.. I seriously do not rate Martin Skrtel at all. Sell Glen Johnson, Konchesky, Skrtel, Krygiakos and get in a couple of proper defenders or someone from the academy..Looking at the standard of defending at the moment, there is no difference in blooding in the youngsters now since we are gonna concede goals anyway.. Martin Kelly is going improve with more games under his belt... Micah Richards is available isnt he?

We don't have those tap-ins.  We also don't get many pens, much less than we deserve, so it's hard to get all those cheap goals.  But you are partially right, we don't finish those tap-ins.  Look at Maxi's chance to tap-in and he fired way over.  Same with Kuyt after Torres hit the post.  If we had a second forward with the goal scoring ability of Suarez, I'm pretty sure we would not only finish many more of those tap-ins, but create more as well.

And yes our defense is horrible.  I hope we sign Suarez and after that, even though I know we need some wingers, I would be fine with spending every penny we have left on defense.

Regardless of my opinions of Bent, can't stand him, he also offers no value for money. 19m! Sorry but that highlights the absurdity of the premium English players attract at the moment. Suarez is the better long term option.

As for Downing...overrated. Would much prefer Ashley Young
