Yeah i think this Comolli fella will be the man entrusted with identifying the players to come in and the manager may have some input but its unlikely that its a great deal based on how our owners have done things with the redsox.
I am not really convinced that's the way to go at all as i would think the person that is coaching and picking the team should be identifying what players they want rather than someone else doing the job, but if it saves us from another Poulsen coming then am ok with the new strategy  :D

Rafa is a cult hero for me, like Houllier, 2 good people who have done their best and won us some major trophies over the years, but no where near Shankly or Paisley

Id hope the manager has a fair bit of say in it.  As you say, the manager is the one that has to pick the team etc.

But NESV might have looked at our tranfer dealings over a number of years and decided it was a job in itself to sign the right players.

I think a lot of European teams use this system?

I think alot do, although i dont know specific examples.

Sorry to slightly derail the thread anyway.

Like metalhead has said i think both Rafa and Ged were good managers for us that won us trophies and gave us great nights and memories.

Greats though ?

Not for me.

"Great" manager? What two trophies in six seasons and leaving us in 7th after his last attempt? Not "great" for me by a million miles. Houllier must have been pretty special if Benitez was great.

We actually NEED a great manager. That we haven't had one for 20 years goes much of the way towards explaining our decline.

I don't think he was a great manager, he was a good manager untill the last year when he became a bad manager for us. If Rafa was great what superlatives would you use for Shankly, Paisley, Fagan etc or do you see Rafa at the same level?

Considering the squad we had at the beginning of 04/05, considering that Roman was spending stupid money on an entire new Chelsea squad, considering that Arsenal and the Mancs were both top clubs for years and years and considering that we less resources than Utd and Chelsea at least.....

What could any manager have done to be considered "Great"?  Winning the PL is the only way i guess.  And im not sure any manager would of achieved that with us and our situation.

Exactly it would not have been very easy although we should have won it 08/09, that was our golden opportunity and Rafa blew it. If he had won us the league I'd have been more inclined to call him great. He did win us the Champions League and for that I am eternally gratefull though I have always put that win in the final more down to Stevie G but it was Rafa who guided us to the final so credit where credit is due.

Whatever he was he was a million miles better than Roy. And he gave us the biggest trophey in club football. The closest Roy has ever been to a European cup is probably passing them at work each day.

But yes we need a great manager, easier said than done though. And we don't even have a chariman in place yet.

I love that so many people hated Rafa.  That was evidence that we were a real threat.  (not counting LFC fans of course).

He was a constant torn in the side to Jose and Fergie.  The media badly wanted him to fail.  Fat Sam hated him as did MON.  it was great.

And he called the Bitters a small club.  I Loved the game over signal against Blackburn as well.

Yes that's true but only under circumstances where he his hands were partly tied behind his back by the owners. He wasn't given a 'fair crack of the whip' imo.

mm.. The fact that all the other managers in the league hated him tells you that he was a good manager how ?!

Anyways dont bother answering.. What i wanted to comment on was the money thing you refer to in every post... Bar Man City in the last couple of years and Chelsea's 2004-2005 spending spree, Benitez managed to outspend every other premier league club during his time at Liverpool..
