For me, the best way to identify the top managers in club football is to check the recent history of Europe's most prestigious competition, were the best managers are pitted against each other - The Champions League.
4 names stick out over the last 7 or 8 years.
1) Carlo Ancelloti: 2 wins (2003, 2007) and 1 runner up (2005).
2) Jose Mourinho: 2 wins (2004, 2010) *also won a Uefa Cup in 2003 i think.
3) Rafa Benitez: 1 win (2005) and 1 runner up (2007) *also won Uefa Cup.
4) Alex Ferguson: 1 win (2008) and 1 runner up (2009).
These 4 names stick out to me cos they have achieved the most in the CL.
