Liverpool FC are sponsoring a University Professor to provide detailed analysis of competitors tactics to fathom out the  best counter tactics on the 80/20 rule.
That is for 20% of LFC team effort we will be able to counter 80% of the opposition tactics employed against us, leaving 80% of our effort to develop our own offensive manouvers.
This is the first time that this technique has been employed this side of the Atlantic, although it has been succesful in US Football.   :sleepy:

Looking forward to seeing if LFC take any notice of the proposed system

Contrary to public opinion, this is not a new idea.  In season 1888/89 Giggleswick United employed this tactic in the West Riding  premier division but abandoned it after they were relegated with 1 point from their 42 games.
However a similar tactic was more successful during the War of Jenkin's Ear and more recently in the War of the Worlds when we sent the Martians packing.
It has also been demonstrated that if you spill 20% of your drink 80% of the time but 80% of your drink only 20% of the time you're  seriously bladdered one day in five.  I think this is day 5 for me.
A good and interesting post, Red.

Taken from the McGraw Hill Manual of Football Coaching:
''The main idea behind the concept is to engage statistcal empathy with the opposition. Once the data has been analysed and the key points of their attacking thrusts have been isolated, it is logically apparent where and how the opposition will marshall their resources. Thus it is possible to arrange a very minimal offensive canvas and reappraise the current state of active hedgemony thus directing a very strong reposte into the weakest areas of the oppositions defensive formation.''

Supersub, you're obviously not taking this seriously.  This is something that could revolutionise football in this world and beyond.  Even Mark Lawrenson has said that you'll never make a decent stew with beer mats and he should know.  Do you think we'd have survived the last postal strike living on beer mat stew, I don't think so.  Nor do I think that your food recipes have any place on a football forum.  I had always respected your contributions before now.

... mmm I'm always sceptival about research conducted by University types who experience very little of the reality...

A statistical approach to footie.. does that mean that Benitez would, potentially, write a synopsis of the key strenghts and weaknessesn of a teams performace over 90 minutes (95  min in Mancsh*tes case) ? Thus employ his own tactics based on the other teams peaks and dipps in performance.. ?

.. or are Sky currently doing it any way . with their stats  :D

Zarababe. did you go to University? Do you actually know what research goes on inside our Universities? Im sure you meant no disrespect but that is a pretty lame comment to make.

???
Regarding employing this tactic at Liverpool well perhaps we shouldnt be surprised. Rafa has long been an advocate of technology and if it can improve things by even 1% than its worth it.   :)
The man who came to merseyside from Newcastle, the man who says he's part of Liverpool as much as the Liver building. When he was needed Alan Kennedy was there. And with now just 8 minutes to go it could be that Alan Kennedy has made a little history.

It was a tounge-in-cheek comment.. !!!

... though in my line of work I come a cross "some" airy fairy professors who don't realise the implications of their theories at the micro level.. especially when it becomes nigh impossible,  with regard to turning theory into policy... and then translating it into strategy (action)...

...BTW.. Zarababe BA (Hons),  MA...  but so what... :upside:

Ditto although Im not starting my M.A until next year, (or maybe year after now I have a proper job)
No thats cool its just that as a member of the working class having been at University I have come across much prejudice on my return home and this normally involves questioning the point and the drain on taxes etc. I thought this was creeping onto the forum with your comments and I prob overreacted (sorry) although Im meant no offonce Zara nor disrespect regarding your academic achievements. Im turning into a citizen Smith arent I!!!!

Liverpool University has a history of being linked to football academia and research which doesn't surprise me.

As teams try to develop that extra edge then looking at the detail will become more important as does the stats. You only have to look at the American model to see that happening.

I for one am glad that we move more towards the "scientific managers" like Wenger and perhaps we can include Raf in ths.

The other end of the spectrum is the old school like Rednapp and Smith.
Bribery in football helps oil the wheels, the managers take it and the fans pay for it!

It's actually a University, School of Sports Science. The initial interest came from GH. who had all the players tested for their Peripheral Vision, because the key to being able to employ the technique is to be able to make the most effective use of the data on the pitch. Those identified with top class vision included MO, SG and surprisingly Dudek. The P'vision is essential in being able to concentrate the power of the thrust into the heart of the defensive weakness, hence the killer balls from SG and the incisive thrusts in the box from MO. There are no reports on whether the new Spanish Guy's have been tested, but Alonso is expected to have a high peripheral vision score.
