TORRO CONVECTIVE DISCUSSION 2010/014
A TORRO CONVECTIVE DISCUSSION has been issued at 0640GMT on Saturday 14th August 2010
Valid from/until: 0640GMT-1930GMT on Saturday 14th August for the following regions
Parts of (see map)
Southern N England
Lincs
Midlands
E Anglia
S England
Wales
THREATS
Brief weak tornadoes; hail to 10-15mm diameter; CG lightning; 50mph winds.
Slow-moving upper cold pool close to SE England/E Anglia will drift WSW through today. Short wave rotating around the northern side of this will also push WSW. As the surface, an unstable airmass will push WSW across the area in the wake of an old occluded front. Diurnal heating along with lift from the short-wave will allow showers and a few thunderstorms to develop across the area today. Deep-layer shear is rather weak, but some storm organisation into one or more small clusters make occur, mainly due to the forcing from the WSW'ward moving short-wave along with cold pool generation. Any such organisation could encourage rather gusty winds to develop, and the cold upper air means some reasonable large hail is possible.
In addition, fine-mesh models depict a complicated surface wind pattern, especially close to the WSW'ward moving trough, but also along the south coast of England. Larger scale models also indicated a surface convergence zone close to the south coast of England. Low LCLs along with surface convergence mean that funnels and a few weak tornadoes are possible today, especially across the southern half of the area.
