I love thailand. Took the family there twice. Beautiful people.

Personally I would give Phuket a miss.... to commercialised and too many foreigners to really experience the true Thai island culture.
I would advocate flying down to Krabi and the visiting the islands from there. You can get to Phuket, Phi Phi and my personal favourite, Lanta. Unless of course you love to scuba dive.....

Then I would advocate staying on Lanta and diving everyday at Ko Haa and Hin Daeng.

Magical, magical place and the nicest people you'll meet.

I lived in Phuket for a couple of years Bav (owned a bar there), even back then Patong was the "tourist" destination. Kata and Kata Noi, half an hour from Patong were the best places to hang out.

Best tip, hire yourself a scooter for a day or two , 50cc honda's should still be pretty cheap and get yourself out and about.

It's true that Thais always seem to be smiling, but remember,as one Thai said to me " of course we're smiling, we're taking your money ! " :D

Phuket is nice, we stayed at Kataya (sp) beach, the next one up from Patong. The food is delicious the people are friendly, but they can pi.ss you off especially when it comes to haggling. It's hard just to walk down the street and have a gander about without the b.loody Indians trying to sell you a suit. Make out you're Danish or something and start faking a weird language (just make it up) then they may not bother you.

We went to Phi phi don for a couple of nights, you should go there a boat ride a way, it's picture-esk and you can swim around those blue lagoons that are towered by rock formations sticking out the sea. I think James Bond (man with Golden gun) and 'The beach' were filmed there.

If you want a tattoo get one there to, the first time I went I got one and paid 20 quid for it, I would of paid something like a 100 pounds had I got it done in England. The second time I got one done there the price went up a bit, but those Thai fellas I reckon have a talent when it comes to tattooing.

Tip: We'd often take a tuk tuk to the local side of town, where there aren't as many tourists behind Patong. Eat there, the food is authentic as and much cheaper than the beach front resturants, I think I paid a pound for a chicken and fried rice dish, it was fecking lovely.

A tatoo huh? Never thought of that but I do plan on getting another so could be an option. Is it all clean there though ie new needles ect?

Yeah some people have said Phuket can be overpriced. Also considering Pattaya.

The ones I went to did  :D

Make sure they have new needles and check that they have an autoclave.

I went to one in Kata, it's right near the beach front tucked away at the far end of the cove/bay amongst the resturants. Pricey-ish, but clean and quality artizans work there mate.

EDIT: Pattaya and Patong are overly touristic, Kata's the least toury.
Football is a relatively simple game and Roy knows it ;)

I went to Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Ko Samui with a couple of mates years ago and everyone was very friendly, no animosity from the Thai blokes at all - a couple of things were annoying though - they are all out to con you, and they are very good at it. The second was you didn't have a mission of meeting any real Thai girls because there were so many prostitutes about. When we did meet some we insulted them because we weren't sure if they were prostitutes - understandbly they weren't happy about that.

Brilliant place though - took me about a week to recover from the full moon party.

I went to Phuket in 2006 during World Cup, enjoyed it but not as much as Koi Samui.

I stayed at Karon between Kata and Patong which is pretty quiet but still easy to reach Patong touristy area and tuk tuk ride half smashed on the way home is entertainment in itself.

Zoo down in the south is pretty sad and they have a bengal tiger you can get a picture with. Though one of keepers only have one arm isnt the greatest of advertistments :D
