Roy's Liverpool - How's it Evolving? - Set Up, Tactics, In-Depth Footy Chat

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I am not one to look too much into pre-season friendlies TBH.

Roy is still finding his feet at the club, he is picking up the pieces of a squad that had 12-13 players in a 1st team squad capable of competing week in week out in the EPL, he has 4-5 new players to incorporate into his plans for the season and he has been missing most of his first team for weeks as they recover from the WC (we had more players at the WC than any other EPL club...)

I am not concerned by the apparently poor pre-season. I think the spirit around the club has improved and may improve ten fold over the coming days if you are to believe the rumours about ownership and Torres hopefully staying. We will be ready to welcome Arsenal to Anfield on the 15th August :)

I was watching SSN before on the unveiling of Mark Hughes at Fulham and that Al fayed was having a go at Roy saying that they give him the platform(Fulham) and as soon as he got the chance he was off.

He is 62 can you really blame him for getting a job like this at his age T0$$er

yer there was a good bit on the other night about Al fayed being very unhappy with Roy going.

he said he gave him all the money he could and now he has walked away.

er he got your low ranked looking side to a EL final!
he has taken that club as far as it could go at that time.

Accepting we are only seeing pre-season friendlies and warm ups, I must confess the one aspect of the way Roy has set up so far which concerns me is the way we press the football. This particularly applies when the ball is in the opposition half of the pitch. What we have seen so far is akin to the way we would normally set up when we are playing Chelsea or the Mancs away from home. Now it could well be that we have gone this way because the players don't have the required fitness levels yet, and obviously Kuyt hasn't played which makes a huge difference, but I would be concerned if this is the way we intend to do it going forward.

I would be more concerned with the lack of scoring chances we are creating - obviously it will prob get better when the likes of Torres and kuyt are back and gerrard and cole are back up to speed but from what I have seen so far is still the same problem we have suffered over the years - hoping cole fills that gap .

Creating chances though is a consequence of the way the game pans out rather than a tactical nuance. Yes I'd like to see us create more chances, but we are not deliberately failing to do so. By direct contrast, the decision to sit in with two banks of four and not to bother to press the ball up top is clearly, or has clearly been, a deliberate policy. As I say, it may well change as people become fitter, but it certainly wouldn't be the way I'd choose to play myself.

Sitting back maybe down to as you say - fitness -players cant go 100 miles an hour yet and press all over the pitch just yet due to fitness levels , i cant see us sitting back and parking the bus to defend - if we do then that is pretty shocking . As for the creating chances - its something we have failed to do for many years mainly against the park the bus teams and its the one thing i want to see changed and its hopefully were Cole comes into his own .

The problem is it's very risky playing a higher line and pressing higher up if you have the likes of Spearing and Lucas in the midfield, and Ngog, Ecclestone, Amoo, Ince, Dallavalle occupying the wide areas. These players aren't good enough in possession or able enough to hold the ball up to justify those tactics.

From what I have managed to glean from reading up on the man ...Hodgson's basic football philosophy  when broken down is simply explained his preference is to deploy Two centre-backs supporting each other, the left back solely supporting the left wing  the right back performing a similar task on the right , only overlapping when an opportunity appears . a pair of central midfielders covering the defence  as well as providing the impetus for attack when required ,he also likes to play a Large powerful striker paired with a more nippier and mobile partner ,whether he imposes this style of play on Liverpool only time will tell ... but Hodgson right through his career has stuck with the stringent 4-4-2 formation ,and I personally  think as soon as the players return and he can implement them into the team then he will dispense with the 4-5-1 and 4-3-2-1 and revert to type
What I do know is Hodgson is a disciple of the School of  pass and move football and has stated many times how he believes this is the way football should be played ....and the Pre- season games which we have played recently  given the players available has been more in common with the style of football the reserves play where retaining possession (albeit the opposition being a lot better ) and playing patiently is drummed into them from an early age right through school football and then the  Academy  ... its a philosophy the first team seems to have forgotten over the years ....... I am expecting good things from Hodgson just have a feeling he will bring a more patient and fluid brand of football back to Anfield ...... since he has taken over at Liverpool I have been avidly reading up on the man and the seminars and lectures he has conducted .... one word IMPRESSIVE ...So  I wouldn't be overly worried just yet Michael with more accomplished players on the pitch I think Hodgson's brand of football will be the type of football we have longed to see back at Anfield

I don't think you will be able to judge until Roy actually has a decent run in the season proper. Wait until the next transfer window before the knives come out.

No matter what happens I think Roy has some big balls coming into Liverpool to turn things around after the Benitez reign.

I predict this topic will be short lived, I predict we will have a new manager this time next year if we are taken over within the next few weeks, I even think we will have a new manager within the next few months.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.
