not quite sure what different angle would have helped, bav

The way Xabi had his arm out and the guy in front, it all happening in a split second could have meant he didn't see it clear enough.

He should have made it clear to them all at the start. Yellow card for Van Bommell in the first few minutes would mean he would have to stop. Also, after the first red (if they had continued) the other Dutch players would know what any more such tackles and they'd have no chance.

Webb nearly ruined the game.

Glad Spain one - I think the whole world (bar holland) was cheering for them.

At the end of the day it was a win for football. For the last few years Spain have been the pass masters and they play the most positive football. Free flowing attacking play. OK they have some divers but I don't see how people can moan about that. I have seen Stevie dive plenty of times so that's a non point imo.

Anyway it's not like Holland were denied a stone cold penalty. Robben missed 2 clear chances to finish the game off but fluffed them both. Sometimes as a ref you are dammed if you do and dammed if you don't.

andy_g wrote:i thought the only mistake that webb made was getting the first yellow card out a little too early. there was some rough tackles going in but i think he should have made some hard and clear warnings first, and then have no hesitation in sending players off if they didn't toe the line. once the cards were out he had no choice but to keep getting them out for every hard tackle, and despite some appalling challenges from the dutch he could've avoided carding a couple of them.

having said that, van bommel and de jong in particular were very lucky to stay on the field and heitinger was just stupid. i don't think the spanish were play acting any more than any other team - if i'd been on the receiving end of some of those 'tackles' i'd probably have gone down like a sack of spuds as well.

rubbish game all in all, but great party in the streets afterwards :D

After 20 minutes he should have stopped the game and called the 2 captains to him and read the riot act. 14 yellow cards in the world cup final? Disgrace, both sides should be ashamed of themselves - the biggest spectacle in the world - how many billions of people watched that game?

I doubt even a billion but in any case it's a quite a few. It was a tough game to ref because you don't want to be known as the bloke who "ruined" a nation's chances of winning a first world cup - such opportunities don't come around very often. So it must have caused him some consternation when De Jong went Karate Kid on Alonso. Had the decision been a marghinal one to make, he may not have been forgiven. But because De Jong's challenge was about as dangerous a challenge as you'll get in the game of Association Football, and so blatant, it's hard to escape to the conclusion that Webb bottled it.
