no, you are right. a lucky CL final win and finishing 5th, some 20 points off the leaders, was an absolute brilliant season.

How is coming back from 3-0 lucky? And what about beating all the teams to get there? Can't believe what you are saying mate. Then again just remembered you are a journo so no wonder you are spouting so much :censored:.

Whos a journo? :D

no, i'm totally wrong. Winnig the CL league makes up for finishing below everton in the league and 20 points off the leaders.

I think the positives so far as Hodgson goes are this: (ps. not saying these are all my views but a summary of why some think he can come in and do a decent job.

- His recent success for Fulham
- He knows the English league and won't need that time to figure out the epl transfer market the way a foreign manager might need to.
- He's seen as a safe pair of hands
- He has a lot of experience in Europe (see his time with the Swiss national team, clubs in Europe and last year's UEFA cup run with Fulham)
- Whilst lacking in big club experience he spent a couple of years at Inter Milan where he is regarded to have done a good job.

Likewise the negatives could be seen as:

- He is somewhat a journeyman manager never really having achieved anything. A mid table finsh in the premiership is ok but other lowly managers have managed that
- He is probably not a the type of manager could could attract big name players. We know that Rafa and his past success was instrumental in bringing players like Torres and Reina to Liverpool.

Also his fist stint at Inter was not really a success. Wasn't his win rate under 50%? Even for Inter at that time I don't think you can consider that good

He done ok at Fulham. Caused a few upsets as far as individual results goes but nothing on the sort that could allow people to call him a tactical genius or anything.

This is essentially a big step down for us. We have seen in recent years how we have gone for bargain basement players, freebies ect... and now our first bargain basement manager is on his way.

Apologies if I am not as optimistic as others.

The same thing could have been said in 91 when Souness was appointed given that his managerial success had come in the Scottish Premier league hammering the likes of Falkirk and Hibernian every week.

Had Souness not been a title winning and European cup winning captain at Anfield who would really have wanted him as manager?

I doubt whether Hodgson will finish 6th twice and leave the club in 9th with two FA cup third defeats to lower league opposition two years running as well.

Also when we talk about taking a step down it was Rafa who managed to do that losing to Reading in an FA cup replay at Anfield and getting turned over by Fiorentina and Lyon last season.

it wasn't Rafa's fault, it was the owners. They wouldn't let him buy barry.

So it wasn't because there wasn't cover for Torres?

Remind me again who Benitez bought in the summer of 2008 with £20 million Robbie Keane and not Barry?

It wasn't Parry who bought Keane it was Benitez I believe he bought Keane deliberately, knowing he would fail to settle in at Liverpool, to play politics with the owners.

If Benitez had been that desperate to buy Gareth Barry he could have done.
