A couple of years ago there was link to a Tom Hicks interview published on this site and he commented that he was attracted to investing in sports clubs because certain teams provided a guaranteed pool of customers that would always back the team (buy the tickets, shirts etc.) even if they were not winning titles. Sadly, I think this perception has guided his interest in Liverpool. Instead of competing with our rivals in the transfer market, Hicks and Gillett are happy for Liverpool to sustain a mediocre level of success. This means they had never intended providing big transfer funds for the manager and reflects their willingness to appoint Hodgson, a nice guy, a yes man who might help us to maintain 7th position or at best squeeze us back into the top four but who will not lead us to the title.
I grew up in awe of Kenny Dalglish and lived for Saturday nights to catch a glimpse of him in action on Match of the Day. I was ecstatic at the thought of him becoming manager again. However, I now feel it is probably best for Kenny that he was overlooked. His intentions to try and revive the club were honourable but I have no doubt but that our owners would have sucked the life out of our greatest ever player. Who knows, perhaps new owners will eventually be found and maybe that would be a more appropriate time for Kenny's return.
