A perceived conflict of interest you might say as he has no obligation or responsibility toward Chelsea and has no formal input into the decisions they take i.e. he has no material interest in the club. Attending official Chelsea FC events - attended by players, staff and club officials - a potential platform for information, inadvertantly or otherwise, to be exchanged - does nothing to diminish that perception and you have to ask whether he would have been better to stay away. But, because it is a question of perception and integrity ("Can I trust this man?"), a moral conundrum arises because those perceptions are as likely to be false as they are true, and is it right to expect him to pass up the opportunity to celebrate - in private - his team's successes given that he may well have every intention of discharging his duties as our interim Chairman with the fullest degree of probity? He's a passionate Chelsea fan, he's a highly regarded figurehead in business, he's also LFC chairman; that doesn't mean he is corrupt.
The assumption here of course is that his role as chairman gives him access to sensitive information that - if exchanged with the relevant people whom it appears he might have a degree of access to - could give material benefit to that club i.e. Chelsea FC. Whether it's the lowdown on our wage structure, our exact bargaining position in relation to Torres or Benayoun; whatever it is, it might give an advantage to Chelsea. This isn't just theory either - preventing the exchange of valuable information is one of the reasons football managers are put on gardening leave. You don't want rival clubs knowing which players you're looking at and how much you can afford to pay for them. Equally, though, our financial position is known by all and sundy to be precarious and Chelsea aren't exactly short of a few quid, so how much benefit is there to be gained from the information Broughton may have at his disposal and is it worth him risking his reputation for?
My view: He's here on an ad hoc basis to sell the club, players will not be sold or bought on his say alone - if at all, and any benefit to be gained by exchaging sensitive information with Chelsea would be negligible. Therefore I'm prepared to lay off the guy on this one.
