Trio head race to replace Rafa at Liverpool
BOOKMAKERS say it’s a three-horse race for the Liverpool hotseat following the news of Rafa Benitez’s departure on Thursday.
Long-time contender Martin O’Neill still heads the market along with Kop legend Kenny Dalglish, both at 7-2, whileFulham’s Roy Hodgson is close behind at 9-2, and it’s 12-1 bar those three.
Layers reported that early money was for Dalglish making a return to the managerial role which he occupied from 1985 to 1981, but several firms cut O’Neill’s price later in the day.
Bet365 were among those reporting a flow of bets for the Aston Villa boss and they were as short as 5-4 by the evening.
The picture is clouded byreports that Liverpool may opt to appoint a short-term manager while the sale of the club is under way.
Benitez’s tenure under the club’s American owners was acrimonious from the start and he had seemed almost certain to leave the post on a number of occasions during his six years at Anfield.
That made the sudden end to the saga once a severance package was on the table slightly surprising and assistant manager Sammy Lee is believed to have been put in charge of the team for the moment.
Former Reds defender Mark Lawrenson told the BBC: “I would have thought Kenny would be heavily involved and quite rightly so, maybe not just in choosing the manager but holding the fort in the meantime.”
Hills go 7-4 that he is given some kind of temporary role and that includes the possibility that he links up with someone else in the job.
Coral spokesman David Stevens said: “Punters should be aware that our market refers to the next permanent Liverpool manager, so if Dalglish takes the role in an interim capacity, the market would remain open.”
Dalglish is an academy ambassador at the club and is to assist managing director Christian Purslow in identifying a successor, the club said on Thursday, but no timescale has been put on when an appointment would be made.
Benitez’s departure followed a disappointing season for the Reds, and they are odds-on to miss out on a Premier League top-four finish again next term, while Bet365 offer 4-11 that they draw another trophy blank.
Betfred offer a juicy 9-4 that Liverpool finish in the Champions League places next season.
Benitez is expected to step into the Inter hotseat and succeed his long-term rival Jose Mourinhoat the helm of the Italian club.
News of the Spaniard’s departure has only heightened speculation about the future of the club’s key players, and in particular their star names Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, who have both been linked with big-money summer moves.
Hills go 5-6 about each man staying or going, while the firm offer just 10-11 that at least one of them has left by September 1.
