Mourinho to quit for £40m Real Madrid deal

JOSE MOURINHO is to take on the challenge of returning Real Madrid to the summit of European football, having done the same with Inter Milan last night. He has agreed to become the Spanish giants’ new manager this week in a £40m four-year deal. Mourinho told the Inter president, Massimo Moratti, of his decision to swap Italy for Spain after beating Bayern Munich 2-0 to win the Champions League final at Real’s Bernabeu stadium.

After the game, Mourinho said: “I want to become the only coach to win the Champions League with three different clubs.” He previously won the trophy with Porto. Last night Mourinho completed an unprecedented treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League wins. He will be paid at least £10m a year after tax — the highest salary ever paid to a football manager.

According to the terms of Mourinho’s contract at Inter, the Italian club are entitled to £14.5m in compensation, which would constitute a record “transfer fee” for a manager. There were indications yesterday, though, that Moratti would be prepared to waive part or all of that sum as a thank you to Mourinho, inset, for his achievements in two trophy-laden seasons at San Siro.

Mourinho has been promised unprecedented control at Madrid. In contrast to the transfer policy directed by club president Florentino Perez that bought Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo for record fees, their new coach will concentrate on balancing the squad by recruiting primarily in defensive areas.

The first signing will be Inter right-back Maicon, a Brazil international who has rejected approaches from Manchester City and Chelsea to continue working with Mourinho. The 28-year-old had already made Inter aware that he would leave the club after the final and is expected to command a fee of between £18m and £23m. Mourinho also wants an elite central defender and a left-back. Aleksandar Kolarov, the Serbia international he tried to sign from Lazio last summer, is his preferred recruit.

Sources close to Mourinho dismissed the possibility of an attempt to liberate Ashley Cole from Chelsea, where he is rumoured to be unsettled. While a tactically intelligent central midfielder is also part of the recruitment strategy, there will be no move for Frank Lampard after the failed attempt to lure the England international to Italy two years ago. Instead, Mourinho has drawn up a midfield wish-list headed by Daniele de Rossi of AS Roma and Italy.

Other players under consideration for the position include Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard, who will make a decision on his future in club football after playing at the World Cup. Mourinho was close to taking Gerrard to Chelsea in the summer of 2005.

The new Madrid manager will keep an open mind on departures from the club until he has spoken to existing squad members. While teammates past and present have often complained about Raul’s pervasive influence, the club captain and veteran striker will be offered the chance to see out the final year of his contract if his attitude is correct. Mourinho will be accompanied in Madrid by long-term trusted assistant Rui Faria, the former Portugal international Silvino Louro, who will coach Madrid’s keepers, and senior scout Jose Morais.

While Inter flew back to Milan after receiving the trophy last night, Mourinho stayed in Madrid with family and friends. He will return to Milan this week to allow daughter Matilde and son Jose to finish the school term before leaving the family residence on the shore of Lake Como.

Very objective comment....Mourinho is the best in the business currently (stats will prove this). If anyone can stop the barcelona monopoly in the spanish league, it is mourinho.

Wish him all the luck in madrid.

Well, I still don't like Mourinho, and I wished him lose yesterday because of his personality, but it's undeniable that Inter Milan have reached a peak that was nowhere near to reach before Mourinho came. And that's a Mourinho Merit.

Mourinho was given Etoo and a lot of money (that was an unbelievable Barcelona move), but he made a CL champions squad with it. I won't deny his merit, because it's undeniable.

Maureen does a great job taking the pressure away from the players but he also does a grea job in taking the credit from the players . First class manager , first class tw.at - still don't want him anywhere near our club

Yeah he can pick his teams now and will go to the ones that can afford his wages and afford his spending in the transfer Market - only really leaves 3 clubs in the world , Real Madrid , Man City and Scum . It's going to be interesting when he goes to Madrid as to overtake Barce is a massive task esp with them getting Villa and prob Fabregas - his first real test but has a very good start with the players they have already got there plus being able to spend whatever he wants , I myself can't see him winning La Liga or CL with them . The players at Madrid are the total opposite of the way he plays and will be interesting to see if he turns to a more attacking style to bring the best our of Kaka and Fake , those two players are so far from Maureen players - interesting times for him and maybe the first risk he has taken

Congratulations Inter and well done Mourinho....... and now he's off to Real Madrid ??? so not that controversial then  ??? ................ another team with ridiculous wealth and limitless funds THE MANS SO UNPREDICTABLE ,and there was me expecting him to accept a real challenge and take the reins at Liverpool
Well at the very least we can now close this strange thread ,but I suppose it did prove controversial so I suspect it wasn't a complete waste of time  ???

its a bit rich that many of those who bitch and whine about rafa not getting enough money to compete are amongst the first to put down mourinho's achievements because 'he's had too much money'.

The problem with Mourinho is that he hasn't managed our club.

If he gave the step of coming and start managing our club, many would forget anything bad said about him as long as he brought the success to this club.

It's somewhat difficult for a normal fan to see the good things of an opposition manager or player. Scholes has been a great midfielder we should agree if we forget our heart, but it's difficult to forget certain things.

Those who bitch and whine about Rafa not getting enough money are frustrated to see the Yanks not giving money and the press giving stick to Liverpool (not this season, always). And giving stick to other archrival managers, is one understandable reaction. Meaning, I wouldn't complain too much if you're not able to admit Ronaldo is a fantastic player. If you focus 10000 times in his greasy hair, I'd understand perfectly.

The comments against Mourinho should be understood that way, IMHO.

Nobody's doubting the guys ability. He's a natural born winner.

It's obvious that he looks at clubs as a stepping stone to decorating his own collection but a lot of clubs don't seem to mind this. He arrives. He wins. He leaves. Simple. A league title would be fantastic for us but I would prefer to have someone who could win it eventually and then be prepared to stay and build for the future.

I can see where you are coming from, but I don't quite agree.  I think he wanted to stay at Chelsea and build that future. He left after (reported) major disagreements with Abramovic, and he left the club "by mutual consent" which usually means go before you're pushed. (Not saying this was definately the case, but all the press reports around at the time, and afterwards had him saying things like we wanted to stay, but it got too difficult to continue etc etc) Then at Inter, even before he won any of his treble this year, he stated that he didnt like Italian football, and the writing was on the cards then. He could have not won anything this year, and I think he would have moved on regardless as he didn't like it in Italy.
