LIVERPOOL VS TRABZONSPOR - Thur 19/8/2010  19:45

Liverpool Football Club - Games

Postby Fauxy » Fri Aug 20, 2010 12:22 am

Problem tonight: our midfield pair didnt take the ball forward.

Sure, its not a problem if they have amazing passing ability (Gerrard, Alonso) but when they are players with limited vision they need to take the ball forward from deep. As a result Cole had bearly any service and Babel was stranded.

Good things: Poulson looks like a sensible player when it comes to positioning, will do mascherano's job fine. Movement in the final third was good. Defence was pretty well organised. Even when playing :censored: we still managed a win which could/should have been 3-0. Torres looked sharp

Bad things: Midfield had no creativity. Lucas has no confidence getting forward. Defenders had to resort to the hoof.

I think Roy realised at half time that we needed to open the game up. He seemed to have a bit of a plan B, something which Rafa never had.

RED BEERGOGGLES wrote:Firstly I must say the atmosphere at Anfield Tonight was a bit reserved ...  albeit from a rousing version of YNWA, and then for whatever reason the Turks virtually held sway in as far as their  support for their team was concerned  ..... a packed house of over 40,000 fans and we were out sung by a handful of Turkish yobs .... Oh and their booing of Our players which was probably mainly due to our Greek and Serbian contingent ... but it still wound me up

Now to the game .... not pretty to watch I would say Soto was probably man of the match for the first half  made some telling interceptions and was our main threat on goal ... but then if you play a lone striker and that striker happens to be the enigma that is Ryan Babel (hapless to the point of distraction for practically the whole of the first half and then capable of producing a piece of magic
He personally bugs the fuck out of me ....)
then you should expect it to be a defender who takes the accolades .... Now to the second half, the players seemed a lot more motivated for the rest of the game ,and I thought Poulson started to dictate the play with his patient passing when in the first it had looked labored and slovenly ,now it looked purposeful and he broke up the Turks  play on more than on occasion
Joe Cole started to find more space to run into and the introduction of Torres was like a shot of adrenalin to Maxi and Jovanovic, who started to link up well with Torres with a series of deft flicks and knock ons ....and although these came to nothing it bodes well for the future .... anyway the game sort of petered out from then on and a 1-0 is a decent result to take to Turkey  especially given the teams disjointed display in the first half ... Lets not forget Liverpool seem to leave their best displays for Turkey     :;):
The game tonight was screaming out for ingenuity and bit more poise in midfield as Lucas was far from being in inspirational form ... in truth he was poor..... Aquilani would have been ideal and much better suited( but it seems he is off back to Italy according to the ofal ) especially given the game was at Anfield and against inferior opposition because although they retained possession they never looked like causing Reina any real problems ,and I think with an early goal in Turkey we could quell them annoying Turkish gobshite fans (only marginally less infuriating than Pompey fans with their  fucking cow bells )

explain to me then why roy is letting aquilani go out on loan when we lacked so much creativity. For fecksake lets face it we got babbel lucas kuyt poulsen hardly creative players.

Pretty much spot on  there Red Beer goggles.

As someone who went Sunday as well as tonight there was a marked difference in tempo and atmosphere but lets be honest, the Europa League is the poor man's Champions League hence the £10 ticket price. Like many others it would seem, I decided to take my 6 year old son to his very first game at Anfield and he loved it :)

He's my firstborn so it was like a rite of passage I suppose and I don't care what anyone says I was so proud to have him by my side sharing a scarf and singing the songs (bless the lad, he even moved his lips to the ones he didn't know!). Reminded me so much of myself when i was a nipper !

The first half was disjointed and broken up by a combo of decent Turkish defending and a wasteful Liverpool passing game.

Babel did naff all apart from score the all important first goal and come the second half the Turks looked off the pace and I thought we would score a hatful ???

Joe Cole can't have had too many worse weeks than the last one ...........Sent off on Sunday , booked for Speeding Tuesday and misses a penalty Thursday ! ???

All in all a decent game if only for the last minute of the first half and the whole of the second but this tie should be over by now and it will be interesting to see who Roy takes to turkey for the return leg.

Walk on ............

We missed some chances, I guess the lad did well but not good enough though. Poulsen impressed me, his passing was good and positioning was top notch. Jovanovic is impressing me every time and he works his socks off.  Lucas was OKAYISH (as usual), Torres looked sharp when he came on, Babel was utter cr@p (although he scored), Maxi was decent, I thought his general link up play was good.

But.. WAKE UP DEFENCE! very shaky at the back!

Thats because we are no longer zonal marking. Apparently its man marking now. I didnt have a problem with zonal marking, on many occasions we had one of the best defences in the league thanks to that system. So after using it for so long the defenders are not used to the man marking system. Like everything else though, time is a healer.

So? What's the point "welcoming" fans of other clubs who invariably come in here, may or may not stay warm and friendly, but then p1ss off afterwards?

Like inviting a tramp to a party. They may just drink themselves into a stupour, behave themselves and leave in the morning, but there's always the risk of them nicking something or hanging around because you've made them feel welcome.

EDIT : to me, and I'm sure others, they are like door to door salesman. Why should we open the door and endure their forceful selling techniques just because they knock?!?!? You're better off ignoring the door, the door is there for access in and out the house, not tom, dick and his mate harry to come round and waste your time. I had one the other day, I told him twice that noise in the background was my dinner cooking and he still didn't want to go! Better off without, trust me. The minute there is anything for us to celebrate and they've lost, they'll turn sour. Or the minute they start crowing if/when they've won, it'll turn sour. Leave rival fans for mixed forums

Benny The Noon wrote:Ok we were without Agger , Johnson , Gerrard , Kuyt , Masher and Torres for a whole game - that is a lot of big quality players missing . All players who will walk straight into the team and will improve the team 100% without a doubt - tonight it was mainly second string players plus new players with prob Pepe , Carra and Lucas being the exceptionals

That said there were still players like Reina, Carra, Kyrgiakos, Aurelio, Cole, Jovanovic, Babel, Lucas, Rodriguez and Poulsen in the side so not exactly a team full of kids with Torres coming on making it far from an inexperienced side.

Decent enough performance, another game lacking the killer finishing we need to show. Four games under Woy, six goals and we've played three of those games against pretty ordinary sides and three of the four games at home.

The disallowed goal probably should have been as I think Poulsen was offside, there was no foul on the keeper and he should be disciplined for making such a meal of it (booking for time wasting, red card for continued time wasting)

In my opinion Cole shouldn't have been given the penalty. Why not? Because a) he got sent off last match so why reward indiscipline, and despite plenty predictably claiming it was harsh, Liverpool did not appeal so it was minimum yellow and arguably red ie they knew they'd fail in any appeal. And b) because we don't want to have preferential treatment, why should he be given a spot kick to get him off the mark and not say Jovanovic or Poulsen?!? Is he to be treated differently and like some kind of primadonna? And c) the game was still very much anyone's, we hadn't killed it off, so whoever would normally take penalties should have taken it. I'd say that would be Torres in the absence of Gerrard (and Kuyt), does Cole ever take penalties? He wouldn't have at Chelsea while fat frank was on the pitch.

As for Poulsen, took him a while to settle in and while I won't judge him on his first and only game so far, I can't say as it looks an inspired signing, certainly isn't a long term signing and doesn't look like much of a short term signing either. I'd rather the £4.5m were put towards a younger and better player

Whilst the Newkit history, particularly of Turkish fans in this forum, may well support the reasons for your xenophobia, until a rival fan who chooses to post in here actually stops being "warm and friendly" they are welcome to post.

You are also welcome to not give a "flying f*ck" but that's an attitude that's probably best kept to yourself.

Sorry did i just log into a manc board?

I dont even know how to start picking apart some of the comments here. But i will try.

Aqua, i fail to see how this guy has done anything to make out he is our shinning light of a player some make him out to be. Hes never had a awesome game and is injured more than any player in our history!

Yes you have judged him, as :censored:. You would rather it was spent on some 20 year old that will sit in the resses then get sold for a mill two years later having played 4 games. Mad hes a proven champs league player, with over 70 caps!

Cole looked alot better once Nando came on, so he missed a pen, big deal so did crouch.

Second half was very good. Could have won by 3 on a different night. Doom and gloom is :censored: awful here.

The performance wasn't terrible considering the time of year we're in.  A lot of players looked short on fitness but that will come with time.

At Anfield though... we need to try and come out to play with a higher tempo.  Close players down and get forward quickly.  Then the crowd get into it and the opposition are under immense pressure.  Unfortunately, we couldn't do it.

Like last season, CM is a big issue.  We need Stevie or Aqua in there at all times to make things happen.  Cole and Babel didn't get much support but as soon as they were facing goal it was 1 - 0.

Cole is just trying too hard right now.  And i agree that he shouldn't of being allowed to take the pen.  (although Torres was the only other real candidate).

Poulsen looks like a good signing to me.  His passing was a lot better than Lucas.  Nothing wrong with his goal either... possibly a hint of offside but i don't think it was ruled out for that.

In Turkey i think some big guns will be back and i predict a pretty boring 1 - 1 draw.

For the future though, we need to start matches at a higher tempo and make things happen in the centre of the pitch.

Prob mate, but I think its down to quality, we need another Hyppia to give us balance in the back four.

I only managed to watch the first half but the main pluses are...

Torres looks sharp and he should start against man city
Joe Cole is trying real hard but it's obvious he is gonna be a handful for most league defenses we face this season
Lucas - how many passes did he make that didn't get to the intended player? loads. He even passed it to no-one a few times.
Pepe - never noticed his goatee. Someone stick a picture up so we can see it
Kelly - looked good , great prospect
Poulsen - not bad for his first game.
Jovanovic - warming to him a lot

1 - 0 win. wrap it up next week. walk on.
