Tough game ahead, apperantly Torres is out, SG is back though. Put the strongest side out and win the game. Simple as that. 2-1 for the Redmen.

What's their record coming into this game?

Who did they play at the weekend? What was the score?

I guess you already know the answers? Or you wanted to open the thread.

Neither.

Well, when there are less than 24 hours until the match and there is no thread opened, it's a kind of shame tbh. On any football forum. Therefore there should be no expectations for a thread with a lot of effort put into it. I prefer threads with less details, but with more time to debate the upcoming match. Next time, I hope someone opens a well detailed match thread 3 days before a massive match like the one we are facing tomorrow.

What's the bets Lyon come to town with a pile of inflatable balls though, eh ?

I'm guessing a certain band of visiting fans cu n ts will try to bring their own set of balls and should be denied access.

I can understand why this thread has taken so long before someone plucked up the courage to start it. I was too amused by the lack of it that I decided not to, although I nearly started a (where's the) match thread! I couldn't care less if we win or lose this game, a CL adventure could be the worst distraction for an already faltering season. I think the club, manager, owners, fans and everyone purporting to be something to do with LFC need a short, sharp shock to bring them into THIS ERA. Going out at the group stage could be the shock the club needs to realise six years in and little or no progress. That said I never wish a defeat on the team, but sometimes you have to take a backward step (or in this case fall) to learn from mistakes and make strides forward.

As for the game, we may well win and then lose at the weekend. I'd rather lose tonight, win at the weekend and someone shake some sense into Rafa inbetween to make the latter more likely.

Perhaps the biggest does of realism I can offer in one or two sentences is that Rafa spends £40m a time or thereabouts, but do we have any saleable assets with which to make money to improve? He went out and bought some players, but of what we paid for N'Gog, Dossena, Babel, Cavalieri, Aquilani, Johnson etc in recent seasons, how much do you think we'd sell them for? The point being every player that Rafa signs, with the odd exception, loses value straight away. Mainly because he pays over the odds, but he'd never make a shrewd wheeler dealer. If I have time at some point I might just look at the ins and outs and see how many have been sold at profit, at loss etc. He's now bought and sold enough that you don't have to worry about players someone else bought that he sold.

Prediction for tonight, 1-0 to the home (fingers crossed) side. Perhaps the most unjustly maligned player scoring the winner ie Dirky boy

I think we'll win this match 2-0, with Gerrard scoring at least once.

jesus christ, mick. do you have to be so long winded and negative?

under current circumstances i would be delighted with a win of whatever kind, but to be honest i can't say i'm expecting it. i don't imagine us playing well, even with the return of gerrard, and if we win its going to be scrappy. i'll be amazed if we keep a clean sheet though, so we're going to have to score at least twice.

hopefully while the manager has been absorbed in his computer software to work out the average height of lucas' left boot off the turf in the last half hour of the last game, sammy lee has been giving them all a rocket and that they'll know a repeat of the weekend's level of performance is just not acceptable.

I think he'll play a 4-4-2. back to basics.

                           Reina

Johnson     Carragher     Skrtel/Agger     Aurelio

  Kuyt     Gerrard     Mascherano     Benayoun

                 Ngog     Babel

Personally I'd play Ngog upfront. Dirk upfront on his own doesn't work as he comes far too deep to collect the ball all the time. We need to get in behind them.
