In bulk here hes not only the best player in the world but hes also a vampire. ha ha ,

The real reason Liverpool are brilliant in the Champion League?

Steven Gerrard is a vampire  By Ian Winwood 13/03/2009

Read Ian Winwood’s column exclusively on Mirror.co.uk every Friday

After Liverpool’s impressive midweek demolition of a not at all impressive Real Madrid, talk is once again centering on whether Rafa Benitez’s prefers the Champions League to the day-to-day slog of the Premier League.

This talk will only get louder if Liverpool lose to Manchester United when the two teams meet at Old Trafford tomorrow lunchtime, which they probably will.

But I think I’ve figured out what the Merseysiders’ problem is, and it has nothing to do with the fact that they prefer playing in Europe than they do in Middlesborough.

It is this: they are vampires.

Think about it, it’s obvious. In daylight Liverpool are useless. They are weak and powerless, able to be outfought and outfoxed by teams such as Stoke City.

Place them under cover of darkness, though, and the team become invincible, devouring Spanish legends and Italian giants as if they were pale-skinned virgins.

It’s surprise that at the end of the match the players don’t drive away in Aston Martins and Porsches but instead turn into bats and fly back to Cheshire.

A piece of advice for Liverpool’s next Champions League opponents. Don’t bother with scouting reports or team formations, instead stock up on wooden stakes and cloves of garlic.

If all this fails, the team in red – is it dye or is it blood? – will once more win club football’s grandest trophy in Rome on the 27th of May.

But look closely as Steven Gerrard kisses the cup.

You will not see a reflection staring back at him.

Stevie G is not the best player in the world but he is probably the most valuable player a team could have... now that sounds like an award for US sports...:D

There are better players in the world in every position. Kaka is better behind the striker, Xavi is a better central midfielder, Mascherano a better holding midfielder, Messi a better winger. Nobody, however can cover all of those positions, let alone to the standard Gerrard does.

This means SG is the best average player in the world  :D Seriously, I totally agree with Zidane on SG being the engine of our team. I think you can say he is the best engine there is.

Stevie G = the best player in the world .  Agree with that. Talking about bias, comments from inter fans and mr.mourinho that IBRA is the best striker/player/whatever... that was bias.

It's a bit strange he compares Gerrard to Makelele or Viera as Gerrard has more attacking threat, but perhaps he's spot on in doing so when it comes to consider him the "engine" of Liverpool. He does have that power that drags all the team.

i think he compared both players in terms of the importance of the player to the team.
No one can come close to SG at the moment and i wouldnt swap him for anyone even Zidane at his prime

18 goals in 37 appearances this season is phenomenal. Apparently Real are after Xabi as well as Gerrard

Liverpool midfielders Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso have been targeted by Real Madrid in a £100m swoop. Gerrard's two-goal display against Madrid in midweek has led the nine-time European Cup winners ready to value the Englishman at £80m. (News of the World)

Source is barely credible, £80m would be tempting though.

Spanish giants set for summer swoop

ZINEDINE ZIDANE - coming in
By DAVID HARRISON and CHRIS BASCOMBE, 14/03/2009

STEVEN GERRARD and Xabi Alonso have been targeted by Real Madrid in a £100million swoop.
The Spanish giants made the first moves for the Kop pair after they were humiliated at Anfield on Tuesday.

The nine-time European Cup winners are ready to value Gerrard at £80m after his display in their 4-1 demolition.

A summer upheaval is on the cards at the Bernabeu with former president Florentino Perez ready to assume control in the club elections.

And he has already drawn up a short-list of targets to pin to his ballot paper.

Gerrard is top of that list and the president-elect also wants his Anfield midfield partner Alonso to join him in the Spanish capital.

The England midfielder’s outstanding two-goal display against Madrid in midweek prompted Real legend Zinedine Zidane to acclaim him the best player in the world.

Priority
Significantly, Zidane is in line to become Real’s sporting director under the Perez presidency, working alongside current AC Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti.

Any move for Gerrard looks certain to be resisted by Liverpool and the skipper is committed to finishing his career on Merseyside. But that won’t stop Madrid trying to prize him away for £80m if they sense his growing frustration with Liverpool’s ongoing internal squabbles and inability to end their title drought.

Ironically, Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez was believed to be the main target for Madrid but now it’s the Reds’ skipper who is their priority.

Gerrard has two years left on his Anfield deal and is due for renewed terms at the end of this season.

He has repeatedly made it clear he wants to stay at the club and complete his medal collection with an elusive Premier League title. But the club’s owners have also been consistently warned to end the in-fighting which has plagued Liverpool.

Gerrard has made no secret of his frustration with the public spats.

The Reds captain will turn 29 in May, ironically the same age as Zidane when he left Juventus for the Spanish capital.

Madrid will have high hopes of tempting midfielder Alonso back to Spain for £20m, especially as Benitez is expected to re-ignite his interest in Aston Villa’s Gareth Barry.

But i love Fernando

Fernando Torres tells Real Madrid that Steven Gerrard is the best in the world

By Simon Mullock, 15/03/2009

Fernando Torres has delivered another devastating blow to Real Madrid - telling the team he loves to hate that Steven Gerrard is at Liverpool for life.

Gerrard has replaced Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo at the top of the Bernabeu wanted list after a master-class that saw the Kop captain score twice in the midweek Champions League demolition of Real.

Zinedine Zidane will return to the club he served with distinction as player in a role that will see him attempt to bring in a new generation of Galaticos if former president Florentino Perez is re-elected as expected in the summer.

The Frenchman began the Madrid charm offensive when he labelled Gerrard the world's best player after Liverpool's 4-0 romp.

It's an assessment Torres fully agrees with - but the former Atletico Madrid striker insists the midfielder cannot be tempted away from Anfield.

Torres said: "There isn't a team in the world that Steven wouldn't get into - so yes, I am sure he has his admirers.

"But there are some players who love their club so much that they won't leave no matter what money is thrown around.

"We saw Kaka stay at AC Milan and that was nice to see in these times.

"Like Stevie, Kaka is one of the best players and in the same way he loves Milan, Stevie loves Liverpool.

"It's not about how we would get him to stay, he would never leave.

"The fans love him, the manager loves him, and he is our captain. Trust me when I say he is going nowhere."

Madrid fans sang Gerrard's name as Liverpool warmed down in an emptying Anfield after Tuesday's game and Torres added: "They may have been chanting his name, but nobody will chant his name louder than the Liverpool fans and I know the relationship he has with our supporters. They are his family."

Torres added: "You have players that are great team players - like Stevie is.

"But the truly great players can win the matches on their own when the rest of their team are not playing to the level that they should be.

"How many times have you seen Stevie do that? He just takes the game over by himself and delivers.

"How many players in the world can do that? Maybe five.

"That is how special a talent he is. He took on a Champions League Final and won it. Yes, it was a great team performance against Madrid but when Stevie is in that form he looks like he could take on any team on his own.

"He is the best player I have ever played with, and I have played with some great players with Spain and Liverpool.

"He could easily be the best player in the world."

Torres believes the 5-0 aggregate hammering of Real justifies his decision to leave Atletico.

He said: "This is the reason why I came to Liverpool.

"I made it clear the only club I'd leave Atletico for was Liverpool and now I can see why.

"Tuesday was a statement we are not be taken lightly. We know the defeat of Madrid means nothing now. It doesn't matter who we draw now - there is no easy game - but there is serious belief in the Liverpool dressing room we can win a sixth European Cup."

"Great players can win the games on their own when the rest of the team are not playing well. Stevie can do that. It shows how special he is."

If Perez does get relected which is looking likley he will definatley be looking to bring in some big names and Liverpool is probably the 1st place they will try after we spanked them. I just hope Rafa gets his contract sorted quick so he can stop any nonsense before it starts up. That is of course unless Rafa wants to sell anyone to make room for anyone (cough cough Barry).

Id rather have Alonso any day of the week but remember Nanny had Villa accepted our bid for Barry Alonso would probably be an Arsenal player now. With Villa looking looking like they have lost their balls you never know what might happen come the summer. The team looks so settled now sometimes so I hope Rafa doesn't get any funny ideas or rather I hope he is not forced to have to sell before he has to buy.

Has he committed to a new contract? If the villans miss out on CL football and he is out of contract then who knows? How about a midfield trio of Gerrard, Alonso and Barry?
