Xabi's replacement - Name names and why

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Aquilani is really too much of a gamble, I don't feel confident if he comes in.

Part of the battle in a football game is psychological. To strike fear in our opponents just by the line-up alone and to instill confidence within the team itself to produce the best performance.

We desperately need to sign a player who would, together with gerrard and torres, strike fear into the hearts of our opponents. At the same time also not rock the boat too much with too big a change.

The best choice is Villa, providing Valencia allows him to leave, if not Silva or maybe both.
3rd choice Defour cuz the last time we signed a youngster who was such a talent they made him captain of the club, it turned out brilliantly (Torres) :)

An attack of Torres, Villa and Gerrard. And please note, Villa and Torres have a proven partnership and Gerrard is also proven in CM/AM. Not a fantasy mix of players like *coff* Madrid *coff* where kaka and ronaldo have never played with each other before.

Anyways, how come nobody mentioned Aguero? Does he not fit the bill? He was perfect for me in football manager LoL

To be honest i never thought Villa and Torres have much chemistry when they play up front together after watchin Spain play.

And as for Aguero I reckon he would be a brilliant signing but the owner of Atletico said that it was his dying wish that he was never ever sold.

I would buy any two of David Silva, Van der Vaart, Huntelaar. I believe Huntelaar can be the next great dutch striker and Van der Vaart and David Silva are both exciting players... with the Alonso money + Arbeloa money + about 10 million we could probably sign two of these players. Btw what happened to the Keane money?

aquilani, silva and distin would be sweet but were short on funds.. If we do buy aquilani and a cover defender i still feel as far as our attacking is will struggle against teams who park the bus.. Main priority was to get a creative mid and feck knows if we are.

If we spent 20 million on him and sold him for 18 or 16 or whatever I can't remember... that means that we can still spend that 18 or 16 million... IE if the owners allow it... because surely we didn't sell keane because we needed the money? We have already SPENT it on him that means it's money for Rafa to spend...

Im not sayin they are a bad partnership because they are both great players, and any frontline with those two will score goals.. but I did notice that they werent on the same wavelength

I feel that the potential is there for them to form a partnership. 10 games non-stop of playing together with each other and I'm sure it will blossom :)

They may not have the best chemistry between them, but what they do have is a knack for one picking his game up if the other is not quite on it.  If Torres doesn't score, Villa does and vice versa.

Some seem to like to throw out this "They don't play well together" argument.  I tend to disagree.  True, they don't set the world alight with stellar passing between the two, but they do assist on each other's goals here and there.  It's hardly a partnership that can be dismissed out of hand.

It's all a moot point anyway as I don't see us having near enough to be able to afford Villa, seeing as there are other holes that need to be filled.  If Alonso were still here, than by all means break the bank for Villa.  But now, the most glaring needs are IMO all down the middle of the pitch, starting from the back.  We need a CB that can at least threaten Agger and Skittles, and seeing as they are both not having the healthiest of preseasons that is even more of a case to prioritize at the back.  With Alonso gone it is conceivable imagine we will see a good deal more of matches without the ball, and in our defensive third.  CB needs to be priority #1.

As for Alonso's replacement? well, that is the topic right?  :p
I wouldn't mind Defour or Aqualani, I'd be more inclined to go for Defour.  Strange seeing Poulsen's name popping up.  I could see him in a depth type of role as an upgrade over Lucas, he's not going to bring much in terms of distributing the ball around the park, but, he'd be good cover as a holding mid.

How about a hypothetical on how this money could be spent to try to patch up all of the deficiencies in the side, while getting a bit more domestic, and younger.

Dafour, Cattermole, Wheater, and Altidore.

I won't celebrate Rafa going........ but I will be over the moon if Dalglish comes in. League within 2 years if he gets the job, AND YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT.

A lot of people are advocating the Aquilani signing.
