Liverpool's Xabi fears lengthy lay-off

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso may be missing until the New Year.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez sent the midfield star to specialists in Spain for a second opinion on his foot injury.

Alonso, 25, missed six weeks with a broken metatarsal - and then suffered the same injury in his left foot during his comeback match against Arsenal 10 days ago.

Anfield medics originally expected Alonso would be back in action this week.

But the injury has shown no signs of improvement so Alonso was sent for a scan on Monday - and told he might not be fit until the end of December.

Alonso admitted: "I didn't expect to be out for more than six weeks like I have been. The relapses are a shame."

xabi alonso, my personal opinion;  He's a legend, and still my favourite player at the club. He behaves the right way, he's humble yet confident and he is a quality footballer.

Personally, i think he's a better option than Mascherano alongside Gerrad in the centre, but all three of our midfielders - xabi, masch and gerrard are very important to us. but, in my opinion, xabi is more important in the middle for us than gerrard is. as has been said, xabi dictates the pace and tempo of play, which neither gerrard or masch can do.

masch cleans up and is one of the most tidy players i have ever seen. gerrard, with his pure energy and drive, coupled with technique is a dangerous, dangerous asset to have in the team.

as i said, all three are very important, but xabi is more important in the middle than mascherano or gerrard . (it is my personal opinion )

Xabi has to be in the middle once he's fully fit -- even when he was playing injured against Arsenal, you could see (or feel, perhaps) Xabi dictating and re-routing things from the centre. Mascherano is great at winning possession, but not creative enough; Gerrard can be creative with his energy and attacking flair, but ain't as good at keeping possession (and is arguably better as a receiver than an orchestrator). Xabi is the link, the fulcrum, whose mere presence makes Mascherano and Gerrard that much more effective. He spreads the play better than anyone going around, has a ridiculous passing range and is more comfortable in possession than anyone else in the team.

But in what formation? Tbh, I think if Gerrard can take his medicine and stick to a gameplan, we would be good enough in a 4-4-2 with Gerrard on the right. Some of Xabi and Stevie's best partnerships have occurred when they weren't playing next to each other, but when Gerrard was playing right side with a licence to roam and not have to worry about defensive responsibility.

However, I think we'd be even more effective with a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. Gerrard can go wherever and not leave anyone exposed, Xabi can dictate the play without having to be the main defensive presence in the middle ... the trick to getting it working is having the right personnel around them of course. Yes, we need some left-footed players -- Aurelio and Kewell would be more than capable if they could stay fit. All we need is to get the fullbacks forward like Arbeloa has been doing so well lately.

Anyways, the point is that regardless of what system we play, Xabi would make it work better.

apparently there are reports in spain that athletico madrid are preparing a bid for alonso, now that arteta has signed a new contract at everton.

At least, nothing that can be read in the main papers or radios St Michael. I did hear the interest for Arteta, though. Zaragoza wanted him aswell, but the kind of money the bitters want for Arteta is out of reach. So would be Alonso for Atletico IMHO.

Atletico Madrid coach Aguirre admits interest for Liverpool's Xabi

Atletico Madrid coach Javier Aguirre admits they're interested in Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso.

Aguirre said: "Alonso is a big player and very important to any team because he helps defenders and also links with the attack.

"Today this type of player is almost unique and very valuable for a club."

Alonso admitted: "I have heard about the rumours involving Atletico and maybe Barcelona too but, formally, I know nothing.

"My objective is to be 100 per cent fit for the decisive moments to come in both the Premier League and Champions League.

"I also want to play for Spain at Euro 2008 so want to get the necessary minutes on the field
