Would crouch make a good defender?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Was just wondering what you think?

Got talking in the pub the other day about Crouch while watching the Liverpool match and it was suggested that he might make a better defender than a striker.

He's got the height, beef him up a bit, and teach him how to tackle and he be perfect.

He reads the game well, his anticipation and positional sense are very good, he may not be able to head a ball on target, but that wont really matter.

His big long bandy legs would let him tackle for about 6 feet away, and his good control and decent passing would see him be able to take the ball to mid and play his way out of trouble.

He's got some pace, not lightening, but will keep up with most, and more importantly he comes across as quite an intelligent footballer and person, meaning he could maybe quickly learn the position.

A lot of defenders start out as strikers, mainly earlier in their career, but its just a daft thought and was wondering what you lot thought? :)

might be, but for the moment i would prefer that he starts scoring coz i'm sure once he gets the confidence, he'll be difficult to stop.

I had little idea of who Crouch was before he signed for Liverpool. When I suggested here that the starting eleven should be Morientes - Cisse, somebody "thwap"ed me saying if I forgot about Crouch.

THing is, that now that many people is flaming him,  I see this player promising. :D I think he needs time, I wouldn't get rid of him, I see him good details, when 27 he might be an excellent striker. Perhaps the weight of Anfield is too much for a 24 year old striker, but give him time.

About switching, well, I think he still have to learn more as a striker, but I've seen many players that in the late stage of their career switch their positions, so age should not be a trouble.

Interesting debate and it might explain why he isn't/doesn't score goals :D

I also had a discussion on the train with a fan and he said that he never seems to head the ball at speed, that is runing onto it hence his headers have no power.

For me if you stregthen him up then you might consider moving him up to be a forward as you have enough decent defenders.

Also for me its the greatest insult to an attacker to suggest he may make a defender, deate by all means but not realistic.

Also as a defender you might only get $1m (me pounds sign has gone!) whereas as an attacker he's worth $7m

In all seriousness guys this is a more ridiculous thread than the Traore to Arsenal one. Is the person who started it taking the mick or what? We are being asked to consider whether a lad who probably weighs 12 stone dripping wet despite being 6ft 7" is strong enough to play centre half? This the same fella who is absolutely devoid of any turn of pace whatsoever? This the same lad whose greatest quality is his deftness of touch and his appreciation of where other players are around him? The short answer is no Crouch couldn't play centre-half, I assume that's where the topic starter meant to play him and not at full back.
So in short it's a no. While we're at it, Reina probably wouldn't make much of a centre forward either.

Its still debatable that he is going to make a good footballer, let alone center half or striker......The lad has an awful lot to prove to everyone at the moment and im not sure he is up to it, he has never done ok anywhere, he has either been a revelation or a flop, at the moment its early days but its looking the latter and only he and his team mates around him can change that.

He looks misreble is a liverpool shirt and things havent gone well so far, but its amazing what a goal can do and its unfair to judge him until he lifts a little weight off his sholders.

So Come on Crouch lad give us something to cheer today and shut all ye fu*king critics up for at least 24 hours.
