Winger or creative second striker

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby JoeTerp » Mon Jul 02, 2007 10:43 pm

I am a little weary of thinking that Kuyt will bang away a ton of goals now that Torres will be creating so much from the Second Striker position. He seems to lack a killer instinct that I see when I watch Fowler and Owen highlights, and to be honest I see it a little bit in Lindfield, not saying that he is ready to play for us.  WHen I saw Kuyt's Feyenoord video's it looked like he had it, but I didn't see it at all last year. I think the Chelsea Semi might be clogging my brain but there were two extra time chances when he was on the ball with a clear chance and just lacked composure.  Maybe it was because he wasn't playing forward enough all year, maybe it was because of other reasons.

4 c midfield players + 1 young unproven kid

Heinze would be great cover cb + would be a solid left back.

one more striker required, plus two wingers, after the Torres signing. We will keep kewell but we can't rely on him, form or injuries, so he will need some competition for his place. I believe we still have alot of money in the coffers to buy these three world class players.

Surely it has to be a left winger? I can't see another striker coming in on the back of the Torres move. Rafa has re-assured Crouch he's going no-where, Kuyt has only just come in and Voronin hasn't even arrived yet and that still leaves Bellamy. Unfortunately there aren't that many quality LMs out there right now. I still like Gamst Pedersen, he's got decent pace, has a good cross, has a trick or two in his locker, is a good team player, works hard defensively and will score a few from dead balls and open play. Failing that David Silva would be a good choice.

As for Tevez, can't see him staying in England. He'll be at Madrid soon enough i'd imagine.

ideally we need imo, a creative striker (assuming bellamy & cisse will be gone) and a couple of wingers (one top class left winger & one versatile who can play both wings)

i can see us signing Benayoun as the versatile winger who will be used for back-up, and i also see us making another attempt to sign Simao. the creative striker is abit of a head scratcher. i can't see us signing Tevez personally.

--------------------------------------

On a side not i'd like to see more goals from our midfield from other people and not just Stevie G.

Pennant and Kewell (or whoever we bring in) will need to get amongst the goals for us to keep pace with Man Utd and Chelsea.

If you look back over the last 5 or 6 seasons you'll find that the league winners have at least 1 winger that scores lots of goals or at least a decent amount spread between them.

*Note that some of these goal totals vary and some are only league goals scored as a I couldn't find their total for the season.

Man Utd 06/07:
C Ronaldo:  23 goals

Chelsea 05/06:
Arjen Robben: 7 goals
Joe Cole: 8 goals

Chelsea 04/05:
Damien Duff: 6 goals
Arjen Robben: 9 goals
Joe Cole: 8 goals

Arsenal 03/04:
Robert Pires: 19 goals
Freddie Ljungberg: 10 goals

Man Utd 02/03:
Ryan Giggs: 8 goals
David Beckham: 6 goals

Arsenal 01/02:
Robert Pires: 13 goals
Freddie Ljungberg: 17 goals

I think we're done in the striker department now, when Torres signs we'll have 4 first team strikers and that is assuming Bellamy and Cisse go. Tevez isn't even a target for Rafa I am sure, despite what the papers say.
For me the priority is out wide, a top right sided winger (Simao) and cover on the left (Pederson is a good shout) but we also need a centra back. Hyppia might even leave but even if the old soldier stays we could do with cover for Carra and Agger. We might start seeing some more of Palletta although he hasn't looked up to it just yet.
Whichever way you look at it we're not far off, Heinze has been mentioned to cover left back and Benyoun to replace Luis Garcia but other than that I can only really see one BIG signing coming in and that would hopefully be a wide man.

now about the whole winger debate i reckon we dont really need one all we really need is about 3 signings 2 be able 2 challenge 4 the title

these wd be torres heinze n benyuon

u mite say this is crazy but hold dat thought n i'll explain better

it seems our new owners will not splash de cash so it leaves rafa wit a problem getting us de top drawer wingers we all crave

so instead he buys the 3 players above n along wit lucas insuna  voronin anderson n hamill possibably hobbs we can change to a 3-5-2 formation which rafa has tried a couple of times

my team wud be

home:

                              reina

         carra           agger           heinze

                mascherano        alonso

                            gerrard

       pennant                                      kewell

                  torres                 kyut

n with away games  drop pennant n kewell  replace them wit finnan n riisle as wingbacks n push alonso up alongside gerrard

benyuon is cover for gerrard and lucas can be cover for alonso

this way we can build on our strenghts ie top class centre midfield n defence without breaking de bank 2 compete wit chelskei n manuer 4 de same sort of players

in torres we have an excellent link man with crouch as backup n it allows kyut 2 do what he does best stay in de 6 yard box n from what i've seen of voronin he is a goal poacher too

it will also allow us 2 give the young lads a chance 2 prove their worth

what ya think wud rafa be thinking like this

That formation is FUBAR! WHy? It's tainted with that Manc C*nt at left-back!

How about playing Torres, Kuyt and Tevez upfront against most of the lesser teams in the league.

we should get joe cole.
or arjen robben.
or hossein kaabi from iran. he is a very exciting defender
matt etherington and benayoun from the hammers arent exactly bad.
or how about daniel odonkor?
we dont need big names. we need players we can outclass the opposition. thats what matters most.

I'd still be on the look out for both (a winger and a frontman) if Tevez is on the move we should still be on the look out for him. But I doubt Rafa and the board will be looking or even can afford to do that, I'm not convinced Torres is worth that much for starters, also I'm not convinced he's the player we really need especially as it means Garcia looks set to be going in the opposite direction. But thats another topic and discussion so hopefully I'm proved wrong on that one.

We still need wingers too. But I'm not to sure which flank is in need most right or left. I'd probably and personally opt for a right winger, one that can make Jermain Pennant play second fiddle to him and keep Gerrard center. I dont really know who is out there at the minute, Mancinni looks a good player and I've heard he can play on both flanks.

The left flank is congested up with solid players, notably Riise, Aurlio too can play there but to me both are not good enough when going forward. So its high time we throw all our eggs in one basket and rely on harry 'sicknote' Kewell for once to produce the goods, thats what he's paid for.
