Winger or creative second striker

Concerning S@int's question I'd answer that what we need is to strenghten the wings now.

I don't know how many goals Torres will score, but I know he'll create plenty of chances in which he has two defenders running after him, and I know for a fact Crouchy, Gerrard and Kuyt will make more danger out of that situations. The upfront set is better than yesteryear.

Rafa tried to strenghten the left wing yesteryear with Gonzo and it makes sense he tries to bring another player to replace the failure Gonzalez has been. And I think he'll bring a good name like Silva of Valencia, a team that is in a civil war with the sport director talking very badly of the coach.

Benayoun will complete the right wing inho when a winger role is not required in the right, so the left flank will be the next major step imho.

I think a winger is more the priority over a second striker to be honest.  Pennant and Kewell aside, there are no other natural wingers in our squad, and Kewell can hardly be relied upon to stay fit for a season.  On top of that players who covered the wide positions last season will not be here - Zenden and Garcia.  Aurelio and Riise offer little threat to full backs when played there and Leto I won't comment on as I've never seen him play.  Gerrard can do a great job on the right, but this season I feel we have to keep him in one position and not move him around every week in order to get the best out of him.

With Garcia leaving, I'm happy enough to welcome Benayoun who'll offer cover for both flanks for a reasonable price.  If not Benayoun then Nakamura from Celtic is reportedly available cheap due to a release clause in his contract and his agent is sounding out Premiership clubs (we have shown an interest according to some tabloids).  Good player, very much in the Garcia mould but with a devastating free kick in his repertoire.  On top of that I'd sign an out and out winger.  I never fancied Malouda and I'm not Simao's biggest fan, but I'd take Mancini any day.

Having said all that, someone touched on the fact that players like Tevez don't become available often and I agree strongly with that.  If we have a chance to sign him we should, even at the expense of a winger I'd go as far as to say.

Just to comment on some of the names mentiones in this thread..

1. I read that David Silva signed a new contract with Valencia.

2. I read that the Nakamura release clause is pure fiction.

I would post links, but hey. You can find them on your own.

Yes I could, but I won't, I trust your word.

I missed that bit to be honest. Anyway it's not a matter of a specific name or nationality or team, I'm pretty sure Rafa will bring some known quality for the left wing.

hello 2 every1
now about the whole winger debate i reckon we dont really need one all we really need is about 3 signings 2 be able 2 challenge 4 the title

these wd be torres heinze n benyuon

u mite say this is crazy but hold dat thought n i'll explain better

it seems our new owners will not splash de cash so it leaves rafa wit a problem getting us de top drawer wingers we all crave

so instead he buys the 3 players above n along wit lucas insuna  voronin anderson n hamill possibably hobbs we can change to a 3-5-2 formation which rafa has tried a couple of times

my team wud be

home:

                              reina

         carra           agger           heinze

                mascherano        alonso

                            gerrard

       pennant                                      kewell

                  torres                 kyut

n with away games  drop pennant n kewell  replace them wit finnan n riisle as wingbacks n push alonso up alongside gerrard

benyuon is cover for gerrard and lucas can be cover for alonso

this way we can build on our strenghts ie top class centre midfield n defence without breaking de bank 2 compete wit chelskei n manuer 4 de same sort of players

in torres we have an excellent link man with crouch as backup n it allows kyut 2 do what he does best stay in de 6 yard box n from what i've seen of voronin he is a goal poacher too

it will also allow us 2 give the young lads a chance 2 prove their worth

what ya think wud rafa be thinking like this

I think it needs wingbacks, not wingers.

That has to be one of the most gung-ho formatioons I have seen in a long time, and I don't think Rafa, or any other manager, would ever use it.

The people is talking much about the left, about Heinze, and all that, but a name that I haven't read much as of late is Fabio Aurelio, and I think he can be important next season if he isn't unlucky with the injuries.

What do I think of 3-5-2?

I'll ask the question another way, which team after Cruyff's Barcelona has ever achieved something with the 3-5-2?

Liverpool won the CL against Milan ? although you could argue we played 3 -6 -1.

I think 3-5-2 is very popular with supporters because it enables them to squeeze in an extra striker or midfielder while giving the illusion of balance(works great in Champ manager). In practise most teams would be exposed down the flanks.

but having 3 centre backs and 2 defensive midfielders we wouldn't be left ungaurded n this was meant to be the team for home games where we expect to attack most of the time
