Given that Rafa is keen to give the youngsters a go, why weren't they given a chance before? Is it that they have all suddenly developed into players in the last six months, or is it that Foolier just didn't believe in them at all? If its the latter, then why? While they don't quite look up to the Arsenal crop of kids they look pretty good to me. Must've been worth a look before.

Haven't seen the game but heard it on the radio. Looking forward to the highlights in a bit. Gutted i didn't go. Couldn't afford it though. got £67 for the next two weeks.

Mellor got a few run outs in 2002/03 and a few starts, impressing in a League cup game against Sheff UTD.

Patridge started the League Cup game against Stoke (we won 8-0  ) in 2000/2001 (almost 4 years ago tonight) but he then completely disappeared off the radar.

Houllier talked up Welsh and Warnock last year but neither were given a chance.

I'm not a 100% sure what the story was with Whitbread: I remember him playing in the reserves but he was never really mentioned as a first team hopeful.

Potter had done well for the reserves and very well for the Irish underage sides, but again, he was never tried.

I think with Houllier having that fall out he never went near the academy, the players themselves have said that rafa has spoken to them personally and is always there.
It will save us an awful lot of money if there is a gerrard or owen lurking there, and zack whitbread seems to be a moulding of an old stephan Henchoz, they all look good Igor and Djimi are turning themselves round and moulding themselves into first teamers.
But it might have been a case of the unknown tonight for boro, cause none of them play for us on a regular basis, so its hard to tell your team what to expect from the oppostion in steve maclarens case.

Yeh Stu Diao is terrible. Like you I listened to it on talksport but he even sounds bad never mind what he looks like.

We seemed to do well (I finally heard it on radio), but remember, Boro had some good players out and their young guys are very good (didn't they win the FA Youth Cup a year or two ago?)

I didn't see the match tonight but finally managed to hear most of the second half on radio. Seems that Igor was again influential.

He was one of the strangest Houllier signings given the hype at the time (i.e. Madrid and Juventus were interested blah blah blah).

To be honest, I never rated him at all as a player, but his pre-season performances were good and he has looked the part in the games he had played this year.

The only sign I ever saw of him being a decent player in the past was when he came on for the last 10 minutes or so of the UEFA cup game against Auxerre at Anfield in 2002/03, when he had some great penetrating runs like the run he made against Depor in the game last week that led to the goal.

The young lads are doing us all proud in the Carling Cup, but not many of them will get the chance, and not too many of them are really pushing that hard for a place.

They would not cut it in the Premeirship, lets not get carried away here boys and girls.

I went, and it was a great display from the young lads, however Warnock was a little quiet, big Zak needs to work on his distribution, Potter was subdued and Pongolle was impressive with his close control. Mellor deserved the two goals after a tireless display, and Igor impressed yet again.

The lads dominated an experienced Boro side, who to be honest only showed anything in the latter stages when Zenden found a bit of space.

Salif Diao is embarrasing, I cannot see anything in the lad to say he should get a place on the bench ahead of Welsh, Partridge, Potter, Warnock, Igor or anyone for that matter.

Not really, if i'd gone i can get home in 45 minutes (ish) and i live in Whiston (10 miles away).

My guess is Leons from Allerton/Aigburth/dingle ways. (4/5 miles away).
