Anelka is the best option for me. He is a good all round player with a proven track record in england. Will be less expensive than the other players and just as good if not better.

Ashton barely average? Clearly you haven't seen him play.  I'm not saying he's a superstar but he has a hell of a lot of potential.  If he's still playing for West Ham at the end of next season I'll be very surprised, he'll definitely move on to bigger and better things.

He may not be quick, but when you weigh it up he has just about every other attribute a striker needs.

Too slow to have an impact in European games?  That's complete nonsense mate, the European game is much slower than the prem but he still looks a good player in the league.

at this point we cannot take a chance on another #1 striker, therefore we really need someone with epl experience. nando and cisse were worldbeaters in france but have both failed and cost big bucks

as much as i love god we cannot go into next season with him as our #1 choice

anelka - a problem child -- no

bellamy-- another problem child and only hughs seems to control him-- no

owen-- i have 3 owen jerseys but after the shun last year- i think he's in it for the money not the team - left for glory- we won #5 without him haha

defoe-- sweet -- fast way better than cisse

yakubu-- interesting fast

keane -- i'm a fan

aj-- everyone wanted him last year why not this year

from above the logical choice is defoe

why?? we have big- crouch, we have smarts but slow- god, we need speed so he has that plus skill

the #4 striker should be someone we can take a flyer on, maybe a south american maybe just a young guy -- face it he won't play with those guys in front

for what its worth:: after watching the wb game it shows how much we need a speedy winger -- if we had a skilled fast guy our striker issues would largely go away -- we could live with crouch, god and nando +1

rafa will do the right thing :buttrock

Back to the thread:

All the players listed above have got a fair bit of talent.
I'm just hoping that we splash out in the Summer and get a top striker.
I've heard we're gonna get Owen back; but wouldn't be surprised if it's someone from La Liga - I'd bet on Villa.

VILLA- £120M buy-out clause
TORRES-£60M buy out clause
DEFOE-£15m plus and sulks if he is'nt in the team
JOHNSON-RIP-OFF only scores penalties and has a bad reputation with refs about diving
ASHTON-GOOD PLAYER but already got Crouch and he's loyal to West Ham
Bent-best option: wants to be in England squad fast, strong and scores goals
YAKUBU: consistently scores goals, after this season he will have close to 70 in three years for clubs who create less chances than we do.

i know hes not on the list but i'd like to see us buy dirk kuyt aswell as sergio aguero.

i know some will say we cant afford both but i think we can easily.

unloading cisse,morientes,a.l.t.,kirkland,warnock,dudek,pongolle,troure,diao and mellor could fetch us upto £20m or at least £17m.

with gonzo, palletta and aurello already in the bag this just leaves the r.m position to fill and i think spending £4-5 m on pennant will give us enough to really go for the league this coming season.

i know this equation makes our squad look thinner butalot of those players have been already loaned out and we bought 3 great players in the transfer window.

Clearly we will buy at least one striker as it appears that Rafa has finally bitten the bullet on Morientes and accepted he'll never make it. Many will laugh, but I've got a sneaking feeling that the lack of interested parties and a fledgling ability to play wide right may mean that Cisse will not be sold. His movement against WBA where he kept tracking inside the full-back almost every time we got the ball, had the distinct look of a training ground tutorial to me and transformed him as a player. If, and it'a a big if where Cisse is concerned, he has the intelligence to use the ploy a little more sparingly and put the full-back in the difficult position of not knowing exactly which way he is going to track, then he will cause many a left-back problems with his pace. I'm not suggesting he'll be first-choice right-side, but he may be a valuable alternative to whoever we do get in that position.
As for the striker to come in (I'm assuming that Crouch and Fowler stay) I think the Arsenal/Juve game was an education. When you hear of these exotic sounding superstars possibly being available the heart quickens with images of them tearing up opposition defences for fun, with a Henriesque bid for World player of the year a formality. The reality is however you could be staring down the gunbarrel at Trezuget or that Swedish fella (I can't spell the Frenchmans name so I'm not even going to try wuith his). Nine points clear in Serie A? Jeez if that's not an ordinary team I haven't seen one and it follows, an ordinary league. The strikers were an embarassment and I personally wouldn't consider either of them.
To cut a long story short, from the couple of clips I've seen David Villa looks like the one to me. That said, I'm sure Rafa will buy somebody cheaper and less well known. I've also got a feeling we'll sign that young Argentinian kid who looks a fantastic prospect so it should be an exciting season anyway.

Wishful thinking.  :D

Anyway, a name nobody has thrown out on this forum is Nelson Valdez. Paraguayan international. Plays for Werder Bremen. I don't follow the Bundesliga and haven't seen him play much really, but the one full match I did (Paraguay vs. Argentina) he was immense. He has a decent return of goals for his appearances at club level this season as well. Just another name, though...

defoe not good enough for LFC for me... if we want 2 win the title next year we hav 2 get better strikers than that. I personally would get either kuyt or torres . And go in for riquelme.

In fairness JBG has championed Riquleme for a while and when you see him playing both for Villareal and Argentina, it's easy to see why. He's undoubtedly a fantastic player but I'm unconvinced you could accomodate him in a team in the English Premiership. He'd be a virtual passenger when you haven't got the ball, and playing where he does would need to produce a couple of pieces of magic per game to make up for his deficiencies in a defensive sense. He's a great player but I'm not so sure he could do it.

i agree with this. riquelme strikes me as the sort of player you need to build a team around. that's why barcelona let him go in the first place.

Whats wrong with Defoe, i think he is a fantastic footballer and already settled and proven in the Premiership, he may be in a difficult situation at spurs but if he leaves them and starts regulary for another Premiership side then i think he would score plenty of goals.
I am not sure but i would hazard a guess that you have not seen much of either Kuyt or Torres, unless you watch more of the Dutch and Spanish football than the Premiership.
I think Defoe alongside Crouch could be a potentially great partnership.
