I would rather finish 5th and see a new man come in during the summer than finish 4th and endure another year of shoddy football and excuses.

fourth and a new manager in the summer. tbh Houllier should resign, this is not good enough and neither is setting low targets when they should now be higher

Doesn't really matter. Take a look at the league table. Theres's the top two who are excellent. Then there's Chelsea who are trying to catch up. Then there's a lot of mediocrity, including us. Then there's some real rubbish at the bottom.

Houllier has deflected all the talk about him losing his job by focussing on fourth. But that just means that we are top of the mediocre pile. It's disgraceful.

Houllier should have the guts to resign, anyone who honestly believes he is doing a good job must be off their rocker!

Gerard Houllier says Liverpool remain on course to achieve the target they set themselves at the start of the season.

"Since last summer the aim is clear for everyone. We need to get qualification to the UEFA Champions League and to finish in the top four in the league," Houllier told France Football.
So by finishing 4th we have achieved our aims this season?! That's pathetic !!  :(

"My idea was to build Liverpool into a bastion of invincibility. Napoleon had that idea. He wanted to conquer the bloody world. I wanted Liverpool to be untouchable. My idea was to build Liverpool up and up until eventually everyone would have to submit and give in."

By the way, the top two are Arsenal and Chelsea....UTD are currently 3rd, but I see your point.

Chelsea will be stronger next year...a lot of the underachieving players like Crespo will do better next time, plus they'll probably pull off one or two sensational signings in the summer.

I'd like to say that Manure are finished, but the truth is that they are not and they will be strong again next year.

I think the original poster's question was whether we were prepared to sacrifice a Champions League spot if it meant finally getting rid of Houllier, i.e take a massive step backwards in order to take two steps forward.

I don't know....I dont rate GH but the club needs CL football at the moment.

If the club had balls it would sack GH regardless of what happens....but that won't happen.  :(

The big gamble with fourth spot is that it doesnt guarantee Champions league football.Look at Newcastle who came fourth last year yet found themselves playing in the UEFA cup all season.Fourth spot is a con and GH is taking us for suckers.

I agree GreenRed.

You aren't guaranteed CL football with 4th (or 3rd) spot. All you get is a shot at it.

For Premiership sides you are almost 75% there, but occasionally you could come up against a very competitive team in the qualifiers.

Newcastle are a topsey turvey team...I'm convinced the Pool would have beaten Partizan Belgrade.

There's no point in getting CL football then getting well beaten by teams because we are not up to it. And we are not up to it. I'd take 5th spot, get rid of GH and try again with new ideas, good man management and someone who can get the best out of the team.

The point of getting rid of GH is you will wake up from sleep with series of bad dreams and to live a brand new life.
We have more than capable players to survive to the top, but remove any mind from the bad history first.
Divorce does not always mean one of the parties is bad (or both). But it also about the comptibility.

I would take 4th spot.  Even if it means we keep GH.  I don't think hes a bad manager, hes a reasonably good manager.  Just not good enough for a club with expectations as high as us.  He would be more suited to a lower club such as Tottenham, Aston Villa, Middlesborough etc.
