We should always have 2 or 3  youngsters on the bench for home games and if the game is as good as won bring em on, if we are already a goal or 3 up the crowd would be in chear and unlikely to get on their back if a pass or two goes astray, they'll leave the field a winner and their confidence will grow, unlike getting selected to play in the cups in a bruising encounter and ultimately having to shoulder the blame for us being knocked out year after year. I really hope Rafa starts to use/trust his top quality youth in the prem, what harm can it do to bring them on when we're well on top?

No doubt some of those same people will be claiming it as a masterstroke of genius to eventually keep Alonso should he go out and have a stormer this season. I can just see it now, "thank God Rafa put the block on the transfer. He was never actually going to sell Xabi, he just did it to stir him up, brilliant man management    ".

Way too risky, especially with only five subs in the Premiership (as is at the moment unless that change to seven went through without me hearing about it) You need a keeper and CB/defender on the bench for injuries and the other three will tend to be more attacking subs for tactical changes. So where exactly would you fit in "2 or 3 youngsters" ? Fair enough in European games with seven on the bench, even then two might be the upper limit and if we did things the way we should, then we'd qualify after four games and some could start.

Rafa doesn't play the strongest teams in some cup games. That is the opportunity for the kids, fact is most won't make it so what is being suggested in terms of fielding kids and giving them experience is quite probably a waste of time. We give the kids a place on the bench, they enjoy their experience and soon enough are gone. If they're good enough they'll make it to the bench without having to make sacrifices in terms of strength on the bench. They may not like losing, but the fact is they can win when the opposition aren't that good and lose when they are, but if they get wrapped up in cotton wool and can't take defeat in their stride then they'll never make it. Bring them on when we're winning may be good for their confidence in a way, but the fact is they will know the victory wasn't down to them. If they win a cup game then they'll have played a full part and THAT will be so much better and more rewarding for them. What is proposed is basically like letting a 17 year old batsmen go out to the middle to hit the winning run in a Lord's Cup final having done nothing else - "there you go lad, we scored 333 to win, you scored only one not out but you scored the winning run!" Rather patronising on the kids that approach

Only Arsenal have any great record of bringing kids through, and even that's a bit of a myth as most of their team are young but not exactly kids. They're young, fair play to them for that, but so are our players. I haven't fully updated the relevant spreadsheet, but Arsenal's average age has dipped to just over 24 with the departure of Gilberto and Lehmann. But of the 1st team only Fabregas (21), Traore (18), Walcott (19), Bendtner (20) and Denilson (20) are 21 or under - some of them aren't yet up to making the Arsenal XI regularly and we're considering playing kids?!?!?

They've signed Nasri who is 21, the problem with Wenger's approach is he's always rebuilding which is probably why he doesn't win the Premiership and then see the side dominate. He breaks up the side, the Premiership title winning sides :

97/98 : Seaman, Dixon, Adams, Bould, Winterburn, Platt, Vieira, Petit, Overmars, Bergkamp, Anelka

01/02 : Taylor, Cole, Campbell, Keown, Lauren, Parlour, Wiltord, Vieira, Pires, Henry, Kanu

03/04 : Lehmann, Lauren, Campbell, Toure, Cole, Ljungberg, , Gilberto, Pires, Henry, Bergkamp

In seven years Arsenal must have got through so many players, Wenger builds a team and no sooner does it win the title unbeaten then he starts again. Last I heard three of the "invincibles" from 03/04 were at Arsenal still, must be zero by now.

Interestingly enough I did some stats  and about 90% of Liverpool's wins in the Premiership have come having not been behind at any stage during the match. Unfortunately we've also failed to score in about 3/11 of our league games, that's too many and loading the bench with kids won't help. If they're good enough they'll be on the bench on merit, like with the quota policy the saffers applied to black players we shouldn't put players on the bench JUST because they're kids.

I can give you a 100% guarantee the move to seven subs didn't come about because clubs want to fill the bench with kids.

And don't patronise me by calling me lad. I know a lot don't like stats because they like to stick their heads in the sand, talk rubbish without stats showing them up and generally believe what they want to believe. Funny how those same stat-o-phobes welcome any they like. All sports have stats, maybe not complicated ones, but stats nonetheless. Without them you wouldn't have a league table, be able to boast Liverpool's trophy records and rub them in the face of other fans, or wax lyrical about your favourite striker. Let's see how many of you predict we will win the league this season and how badly wrong you are - again.

As for the thread overall, I nearly suggested it the other day but figured you'd all take offence. Now some of you think having pops at me is fair enough, I'll say it. Perhaps you should all take a walk in the park, don a blue shirt and support the bitters. Some of the mentality on here beggrs belief, if you want to lower YOUR expectations then go support a side with expectations that match your's.............

I might be wrong Owz but I think Kolo Toure was part of that team. Can't think of any others though.

I think Toure probably is the last one, the media were all over it when Cole was being swapped for Gallas (plus cash of course) and now Silva has gone too. Our squad has only four left from the last manager as far as I'm aware

I dont think calling people lad is patronising its a common phased used by the working class i use it and dont mind being called it makes me feel like i am on friendly terms. 

Was a bit confused about the stats thing i was only one that had a go about them but it was a joke so.
