He read the game far better than Mascherano and had a better footballing brain. Despite his relative lack of pace he never seemed to look rushed which was priceless. His really good positioning also compensated for Gerrard's lack of discipline when they played together in centre mid. Mascherano and Gerrard never really worked for this reason.

To go a little further out on a limb, I'd say Harry Kewell was underrated as well.

I'd say you're going out on a toe-nail with that statement.

Can't really see how Hyypia, Alonso, Hamann, Finnan and Henchoz have got in this thread.... I've never spoken to a Liverpool fan that didn't rate them!

Murphy is a great shout imo as he scored some vital goals and always put in a shift, but was shipped out by Rafa before kicking a ball for him without too many complaints from our fans.

I think Crouch is a shout too.  What he brought to the team in terms of hold up play was vital to us for a few years and despite that he got a lot of stick.  Overall his goal return was not too bad either.  We signed him for 7 mil and sold him for 12 so all in all a great piece of business imo.

Kuyt gets my vote though.  Consistent, scores crucial goals, never complains and is actually a really intelligent player when you watch him, just lacks a little technically but an excellent player.

Sorry but Kewell was alot more over-rated than under-rated. The whole hype of him coming, always injured unless Australia was playing some nobody in the middle of nowhere, instead of doing an op he opted for a summer holiday, asking to be subbed in the first CL final when we were losing and complaining to the ref that someone stepped on his foot while the man he was supposed to be marking went on to score a goal in the second CL final (check the video).

The only under-rated thing about Kewell is the statement "I am happy he left"

Hamman, was the quiet defensive midfielder cleaning everything up, we were awesome with him. Best defensive midfielder we have had in feck knows how long.

I loved Hyypia and Hamann. But this isn't a thread about our best players of recent generation... it's asking who's underrated.

Hyypia and Hamann were both rated, and imo shouldn't be in an underated thread.

Possibly Riise as we were almost always looking to replace him, but he did a very good job (johnson-esque with his defensive frailties but strong going forward and chipping in with some good goals). Murphy is a very good shout, and Finnan to an extent too.

Isn't it asking who is underated by football in general. Obviously as Liverpool fans we know who is good and who isn't. It is who the football world has forgotten

Kewell was a phenomenal player WHEN fit. He was exceptional in his first six months for us in 03/04, scoring nearly double figures in that spell and was almost unplayable at times in 05/06. Unfortunately he was too injury prone in general during his time with us. He was certainly underrated at Leeds though when he was a brilliant player and rarely injured for long spells.

Arbeloa for me in recent times, took the mantle on from Finann and was very much a no nonsense right back, sorely missed in my book.

Yeah, I was interpreting the thread to mean underrated by Liverpool supporters not football at large.  In any case, another name to consider (maybe more for the latter interpretation) is Luis Garcia.  Trickster and ball-waster though he was, he also was the scorer of vital goals in fine fashion. :D
