Riise didnt always get the credit he deserved, neither did Finnan.

As much as I agree with that I have to say Alonso as well.  Alonso was never appreciated fully until we left and realized he made us a second place club.  I even felt Barry should be here over him because at the time I didn't realize how great of a player he was.

Riise had the tendency to score very untimely own goals, so people often got very angry at him.  Finnan was a productive RB, but sometimes full backs are hard to fully credit unless they are more attacking.

Alot of good shouts all around in this one.  A case can be made for all of them.  I'd have to lean towards Henchoz of the names mentioned.  However I'm going to throw Dirk Kuyt's name into the ring.  Dirk gets slagged off alot (more in the past so maybe he has changed some views) but he puts an honest shift in every time he pulls on the shirt and I think he really did his best to keep the team together during the most difficult of times.

Arbeloa is a player who everybody was always looking to replace but he was a pretty good right back.  20 mil for Johnson was not a significant upgrade on Arbeloa.

I'd say Alonso, sadly.

I would say Alonso also. Although we recognise him as a great player, the one poor season he performed for us had many rallying to Rafas decision to get rid. Definately the most under-rated player we have had.

It shows how fickle some fans, including ours, really are.
Alonso was one of the best players we have ever had and those who wanted rid should be ashamed of themselves.

hamann for me. does my head in when people refer to the "makelele role" nowadays like he invented the position or something. hamann was a better player than makelele ever was in that role and he also scored the odd screamer aswell.

Agreed!  Hamann was brilliant.  Unlike other DMs, he could actually get on the ball and pick out a pass or two and of course score the odd cracker! 

Shame that Hamann, Alonso and Gerrard weren't in the same midfield for longer.  He was better than Masch.

I always felt that people were a little too meh about God during his second coming.  He scored some absolutely vital goals for us during the run-in his first season back and was a generally uplifting presence on and off the pitch.

Too right mate, his vision and touch in and around the box was superb as well.
He was interviewed recently by lfc.tv and stated his desire to return as a coach some day.
He is taking his badges now.

To go a little further out on a limb, I'd say Harry Kewell was underrated as well.  His injury record was unquestionably horrific but I think it led a lot of people to dismiss him as a bottler and a bit of a collect-his-wages-and-sit-on-his-a.rse merchant ( ).  On the contrary, when he was fit enough to get a run of games he was a quality player on the flank who popped up with some vital goals as well (none better than his volleyed strike at Goodison).
