It could work either way, but traditionally it has a detrimental effect on the team. For example if you look at teams that have entered the intertoto cup in previous years, they benefit at first from playing competetive games early, and have a good start to the league, but later in the season they tire and fade away, this happened to Fulham and West ham a few years ago if i remember correctly. Im not saying this will be the case with us but starting the season early could prove costly in future but we'll have to wait and see.

:D

You obviously posted while i was still typing,

great minds...

We need to use some of our reserves and youngsters for certain games, such as in the Carling Cup again along with that one game for the Super Cup.

For the carling cup yeah.

Not for the super cup though.  Either we pull out of it or play our best team.  Putting a lot of youngsters in in this game and then getting hu.mped won't do their confidence any good.

I'd pull out of the world club championships too.  There's no prestige attached to it really and its just extra games for the sake of it.  Everyone regards the champions league as the world's premier club competition anyway

City don't get the extra place.

We need to make the correct signings pretty quickly i would think. 30 odd days till our first game of the season.

This whole situation is a real spanner in the works, all our preparations for the new season will probably have to brought forward for the team to be ready in time, Rafa probably wasnt expecting a competetive game till august but now we start a month earlier than expeced! Hopefully we will be able to finalise some transfers soon to bolster the squad, coz we are in for a long hard season.

Hopefully these extra games wont jade us too much later in the season, we have a bigger and better squad that West Ham and Fulham did during their Inter toto seasons so hopefully it wont effect us as much as it did them

But if we go far in all cup competitions we could be playing a record amount of games, 60+ I calculate, a lorra lorra games!!

EPL - 38
Champ League - 15?
FA Cup - 4?
League Cup - 5?
Euro Cup - 1
World Cup - 2

How much of detrimental effect these early games will really depend on who we draw and how well we do at home against them
Play some team that we have to travel to far flung regions of some country with stan at the end of its name after only beating them one nil at home will make it tougher.
Drawing someone close by who we smack 3 or 4 past in first leg at Anfield and it wont be such a problem

If We Draw Again A Weak Team...What are the ticket prices gonna be for the qualifier home legs? Can't see them charging more than a few dollar else the stadium is gonna be empty

It SHOULD mean we start the league season in fine form cos the players will have a better level of fitness and new signings will have slotted in.
Its a few months in that problems might arise, as at present our squad isn't anywhere near strong enough to mount a title challenge. Lets hope some quality reinforcements are brought in quickly.
