1-0 without really trying to be honest. We should beat the at anfield so not much worries.

Reina - Wasnt really tested today and when was made a few good saves

Finnan - Did his usual supporting the attacks

Carragher- Was solid at the back him and Hyypia help the line well

Hyypia - Same as Carra really.

Arbeloa - Still aint sure about him tbh although he did support the attcks down the left

Yoosi - Played ok. Looked a bit weak on the ball.

Gerrard - Strong going forward as usual hopefully him coming of was just precautionary

Babel - Was ok. Nothing special though

Voronin - Took his goal well. But no too much else

Crouch - Looked ok. But really weak.

Mascherano - MOTM - Played really well was everywhere. Looked great as usual.

Great result, awful performance

Crouch playing made us into a long ball team again

disjointed performance because of the rotation but that is what rafa likes so i guess we shall support it

reina 6
finnan 6
hypia 5
carragher 6
arbeloa 5
babel 6
gerrard 7
mascherano 8
benayoun 6

crouch 4
voronin 7

Before the game would've settled for any kind of win , but after only 10 minutes was expecting us to romp to a comfortable 2-3 nil victory . Once again was disappointed to see us fail to assert our superiority . Do we only step it up against decent opposition ? .

Don't get me wrong , I'm as happy as the next fella to see us come away with a clean sheet and and away goal, the return leg at anfield should be a formality BUT is todays performance what I really want from a team as illustrious as ours ?  :no

if anything it reminded me of the "boring boring Arsenal" of yesteryear , victory at all costs , sod the flair ,sod the entertainment , 1-0 will do.

I'm stuck in a dilemma now .As an LFC supporter of 50 odd years do I just ignore the style and celebrate the result or do I wish for flair and entertainment and f'uck the consequences ? Maybe the best option lies somewhere in between but if truth be told performances like todays (and there have been many) are boring the f'ucking a'rse off me . Christ , even the boring boring Arsenal are now in pure footballing terms a much more entertaining team to watch.

I think (well, hope!) that we didn't push too much because of the heat. We hardly got out of 2nd gear but at least we won and didn't concede. If we need to we could destroy them at Anfield.

I thought most of the team played well. Nothing spectacular (apart from the goal, obviously!) but everyone did enough. Sissoko looked better than he did on Saturday. Torres had a bit of a 'mare, giving the ball away easily but I'd rather he does that now than against Chelski.

Says a lot about how far we've progressed when a weakened team can go to France and get a comfortable win. A bit better than the 3-0's we suffered in the 90s with our 1st team.

We always have a habit of making these ties harder than they should. We won and we just need to finish the job.

i am not particularly too worried (even though i didn't get to watch the game)... it might be that the players didn't want to strain themselves too much in the extreme heat because there is still the chelsea match in the weekend...

I havent read any of this thread after match so not sure what the general opinion is.
I'll give mine anyway.
That was one of the slowest paced competitive games i have ever seen. You could of been forgiven for thinking that it was a pre season fixture.
We were allowed as much time in possesion at the back as we wanted and although we didnt create much we didnt actually look like conceding.
If Voronin hadny scored what should be a crucial away goal in the first half i think you would of seen far more urgency. But the fact that we were 1-0 up and away in that heat allowed the players to ease up and sort of player in a lower gear.
I know they were there for the taking and we should put teams like that to bed, but we have Chelsea on Sunday and i am more concerned with getting a decent first leg result in and the players not being over exerted too much than pushing on putting the game to bed and possibly feeling the effects of it on Sunday.
Mascherano was my mom and looks better every time i see him in a red shirt.
Voronin took his goal well, while Crouch looked out of sorts but thats to be expected after hardly featuring pre season and the tempo of the game.
I am happy enough with what i saw, even Babel who was relatively quiet showing glimpses of what he can do.
The only thing that sort of bothered me was the Setanta coverage, it just seems so channel 5, with Dean Saunders woffling cr@p for most of the game.
