I want to see how a 3-5 -2 formation work for Liv.
A paradigm shift from the ortodox 4 defenders

                                              reina
                                 carragher     hypia    Warnock
                       Finnan                                      Riise
                                    Sisoko            Alonso
                                               Gerrard

Flo     Alonso      Hamann      Gerrard       Riise

                         Cisse

Subs

Carson
Josemi
Sissoko
Zenden

After checking at our fixtures and taking into consideration of players' as well as manager's habit, I would say a 2-1 win to Spurs. Not that I want to buck the trend but seriously we could lose 3 out of first 6 PL matches. 4 more matches to go.. After the transfer deadline, I don't think I want to change my predition...

Seriously, can we win games without scoring? I asked this before the Premiership started, will ask this again... and again.
Morientes is ..... well has up till Dec before I can criticise him. So he better work hard. Cheers.

Yap I agree. we have to score..... nevertheless. we must not win without clean sheet . Reina has maintained Primiership clean sheet. The only 1 qoal he let  in was with CSK Moscow. Even that was a freak goal unexpected....he ought to have been alert, but any good keeper, wouldn't be able to stop it.

Maintaining clean sheet is good for our self esteem. For our defenders and goal keeper.

We cant let goals and then strive like mad to do the comeback of the comeback... again and again

There are some hugely optimistic posts in this thread.
Spurs have started pretty well, have a good young squad..and we dont tend to get much there.
I will be happy with a point.
I think the team will be
                    Reina
Finnan     Carragher Hyypia   Warnock

Garcia      Sissoko  Alonso   Zenden

                     Gerrard

                      Crouch

But i would play

                     Reina
Finnan   Carragher   Hyypia Warnock

           Sissoko   Alonso

           Gerrard     Riise

           Cisse       Crouch

This may look like a strange line up to some but, we dont have any wingers that will actually get to the by line and beat men, Gerrard in that position would still be quite central and influence the game as much as possible...he would also be difficult to pick up and could move out to the right and get some of the dangerous crosses in we have seen him produce.
The position held by Riise i know will cause the most debate, because really he isn't clever enough for that role, but he would score more goals than Zenden imo...it would be ideal for a fully fit harry kewell.
Also the back 4 would get plenty of protection off sissoko and Alonso.
I think given time that would be a really good side.

either your just optimistic or you really are a madman

I'm both .... I think we can beat them using with the right fomation .
Nothing wrong with a good old fashioned 4-4-2 well sort of!! With Sissoko breaking  things up an protecting  the defence,i think  that looks a great starting line up!Not too keen on this 4-5-1  that all teams are  playing at  the momennt,Midfielld  becomes too crowed and it  usually makes  for a boriing game  wiith  fewer  goals! Yes i  say bring  back the 4-4-2!!
Yup ! There's nothing wrong . I think when Spurs Attack we defend as 5-3-1-1 but as for this match , it's a away match if chelsea can beat them, we can too . Chelsea beat Spurs with 4-5-1 even when facing with 10 men.
To beat Spurs .... We must attack them  4-1-3-2.

I think 4-5-1, based on the attitude of the team, can be an outstanding system if played properly. The key is to have versatile players--both the fullbacks and the wingers need to be able to attack and defend. Keep the wingers back, and you've got enough men in midfield to stifle any opposition buildup. Send them forward, and you've got a virtual 4-3-3. Look at the attacking football that Barcelona produce, with Eto'o as, essentially, a lone striker backed up by Ronaldinho, Deco and Giuly. And, having two holding mids makes it easier to keep possession.

Unfortunately, based on the players we have, we're going to look toothless playing such a formation. Stevie G can play the attacking central mid role, but Garcia and Zenden aren't exactly striking fear into the hearts of opposing defenders. I don't think Cisse, Finnan, Warnock or Riise can cut it either. Since Kewell and Gonzalez are still question marks at this point in time, I'm not going to go there. I do think Finnan and Riise/Warnock could get the job done playing as fullbacks.

Sure, we're excellent in central midfield--I'd put us up against anyone else in Europe at that position. But Xabi's excellent distribution is wasted if he plays it wide to someone who can't do anything with the ball, and opposing sides can concentrate on the middle and take it away from us, since we currently offer no real threat from either side.

Now, get us a couple of guys who can make things happen on the wings, ideally with enough versatility to either get behind the defense and play crosses in, or cut inside and either test the keeper, play a through ball or open things up for the fullback to make an overlapping run, and things would be very interesting. But we're not there yet, and I think we're going to have a hard time playing 4-5-1 until we get the right players to pull it off.

Everyone uses 4-5-1 now. It worked for Chelsea all last season becasue they had a goodmix in midfield with Makalele backtracking and Lampard goign forward and Drogba was just physical enough to be able to create space. For me Cisse is as good if not better than Drogba and Sissoko can heva that relationship on the field with Gerrard or Alsono the same way as Makalele and Lampard. Even England are gonna use it now. Its more reasuured in midfield.

The best thing about 4-5-1 for us thugh is that Risse can continue making runs and Zenden will not be blocking his runs as he does in 4-4-2

Man, this has been 1  :sleep  week..... England playing a lot like eversh1t (whats up with 4-5-1 all of a sudden....every team seems to be adopting this) .

Can't wait for this match against spurs. It will be our toughest test so far........ if we can beat spurs (i believe we can if rafa picks the right team), that would be gr8....  :buttrock
