Torres - He doesn't need a strike partner

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I think that no-one doubts that Torres has been fantastic, outstanding and whatever word you might write.

This is precisely the best moment to criticise him, now he's worshipped. The best moment to talk what can make him even better than fantastic.

If you saw Spain, under two strikers (you can download aswell), when we played under two strikers it was Torres who stayed at the front and Villa who came more to the midfield to do that job a la Morientes or Kuyt when he was used as a striker. That's because he's better suited for that, at the moment.

Torres has improved that aspect of the game compared to Spain, we saw that against the Germans, Torres was good enough to receive balls from the keeper. He was good enough, because Casillas chose to find him from goal several times, if Casillas didn't feel that was a safe option he would have made a short distribution. Torres has improved that part of the game in England and he will improve it even more. When he's 30 and pace isn't the same he'll be able to keep at top level football if he fully develops that kind of football aswell.

Torres has scored the winner in the final of the EUROs.  Although that alone doesn't make you the best player in the world, that coupled with his general play for Spain in this tournament and for Liverpool this season surely puts him up there and certainly ahead of Ronaldo imo.

The media may be abit unfair and bias but you have to admit ronaldo as had a long season where he scored 42 goals and he had a decent euro , not just up to the standard that people were expecting of him .

Why Ronaldo is 'better' than Torres - or at least why the media, pundits and all-round tosspots 'think' so :-

1) He plays for Man Utd who we all 'know' are the best side  since ever was created. That automatically means they have the 'best' players, the media love someone who runs with the ball, does tricks and they can idolise. A while back it was Henry, they just love to wax lyrical about some players so they can compare them with greats of the past.

2) He scored lots of goals last season from midfield, 42 all told, helps that he is effectively an all-out attacker, takes penalties and dives around a lot, but because he's technically a midfielder then he's phenomenal. Defenders are too scared to get near him because they know he'll go down and they'll go off

3) He's VOTED the best player, no lack of media coverage swinging the vote and bias towards anything manc is irrelevant because votes is proof.

Torres ONLY plays for Liverpool, Liverpool ONLY finished fourth, Torres ONLY scored 33 goals in his debut season, Torres wasn't voted POTY, Torres didn't play in the CL final, Torres ONLY scored the winning goal in the European Championship final - you can see why the media wouldn't have enough material to convince people Torres is the best player around. And why would they try when they preach mainly to a 'manc' (fan) audience and they rarely make bold statements that they might get mocked for. It's safe to go with consensus of opinion, easier to go with general consensus of opinion than not

Well, that Abramovich is close to offer 85M to Liverpool for Torres. And that they say that according to the Daily Star. And that Torres' goal was very important in the final.

This is all guesswork but...

Roman Abramovich is ready to make himself look a complete t!t by trying to prise Fernando Torres from Liverpool.  The Daily Star has learned that the Russian muppet is prepared to pay 85 million pounds (around 107 million Euros) for the Liverpool attacker, who scored the only goal in the European Cup final for Spain and who has repeatedly declared his desire to remain with Liverpool and continue scoring many goals against Abramovich's Chelsea rent boys.   :D

As good as it is we have Torres we must still pursue a decent striker incase he gets injured.

You know what? you've got to feel proud of Torres, and overall our lads.

A 85M offer would make shiver any fan of any club, it's hard to deny that offer for a player. But our players seem so committed and so loyal to this club, that even an offer like that doesn't bother us.

I think it's undeniable that's a Rafa's merit, besides the support Anfield offers. It seems to me that important players like Gerrard, Torres, Mascherano, and less important yet still important players like Alonso want to play here. Only players not playing enough want to leave. The important ones want to stay, even denying better offers. That certainly means they think they're on the right path to win titles. Players like Owen or McManaman did not leave because they didn't love the Kop, but because they thought they'd win the titles somewhere else, just like Beckham.

He makes great runs, but when he is in the box he tends not to make space for himself by clever movement. Seems a bit harsh to pick at his faults when he has been outstanding but I think he could improve in those areas.

I tried to make a similar point and was told in no uncertain terms I didnt know what the BH I was talking about and that Torres is already perfect.

I agree with what you say S@int !

You never said anything of the sort.

You said Torres needs to improve in the physical department of the game in which he's already shown he's more than capable.

You also said once Torres improves, we can start dreaming about the league.

Its absoloutely nothing to do with Torres that we aren't challenging for the league. Torres, Gerrard, Alonso, Reina, Carragher and Mascherano are all capable of being in league winning sides as they are without improvement.

Its the :censored: that we need to improve upon, not the likes of Torres.

Says it all for me really, until the rest of the team improves we will only be dreaming of the league. As much as I hate it, the mancs are much stronger all round. Even if our CBs, GK, CM are as good as anything they can put out, and Torres better than any of their strikers, they have Ronaldo on top of that and look much stronger all over the pitch.

What are we doing about it? Trying to sign Barny for too much money and still no proper resolution of RM or LM. Whether the done deals this summer work out remains to be seen, but basically it's not just Torres that can improve and he (Gerrard and Mascherano) are way ahead of the rest in terms of pushing us towards a league title.

Or put another way we weren't as far behind the mancs as we finished because of Torres

One of the main changes I have seen in Torres between the World cup and the Euro's (maybe since arriving at Anfield ?) is that when I saw him at the World cup in '06 he looked a very skillful player but seemed more interested in showing off his skills, now everything he does he does with purpose and every time he gets the ball he is trying to make things happen.

As Stu says  "imagine Torres with Dalglish"...... thats why we need a great creative second striker someone who will make Torres look and play even better than he is already.  Gerrard does a great job of scoring goals and creating them for Torres, but against the better defensive sides Torres becomes isolated, the runs from deep that Gerrard makes are stopped and we seem to struggle to create opportunities as Gerrard gets drawn into the midfield battle.
