Not had the chance to get on here since the game, (some of us have jobs to do St Michael) but I feel the need to tell you about my experiences of a wonderful evening of football on Wednesday night.
We sat in "the singing corner", block 202 in the Kop where that nutter with the long arms stands and sings for two hours non stop. It was a superb speck, and we are planning on getting the tickets for all the cup and european games up there this season now. Our kid was elsewhere, and he said the atmosphere was pretty average, but from where we stood, on the back row banging the hell out of the corogated iron paneling, it brought back memories of the golden age of the Kop. The atmosphere up there was electric, everyone who knew the words sang, and even those who didnt know the words had a go. Dawson you will be pleased to know that the new Cisse song was tried out, but died to a whimper when only three people where left after the first two lines.
My mind was working overtime, remembering the "good old days" when the whole of the Kop sang non stop, and the football was a pleasure to behold. Then when the game kicked off I found myself counting back over how many swigs of stella had passed my lips. Was it time warp time, the game was different somehow. The team looked formidable, harking back to the great Liverpool sides in more ways than one.
The back four was solid, for Hansen read Hyypia, for Lawro read Carra and for Barney Rubble read Riise with his marauding runs. The no nonsense tackles of Josemi reminded me of Phil Neal after he was plucked from obscurity at Northampton when he bacame Uncle Bob's first signing as Liverpool manager back in '74. Lets hope its no coincidence that Josemi was Rafa's first signing, if he picks up half the medals Phil did, then we will truly be basking in glory once again in our rightful position at the pinnacle of English football.
In the midfield, Stevie and Xabi reminded me of the type of games I had seen when Terry McDermott and Greame Souness had bossed the midfield in the late seventies. Both of them can tackle, Xabi seems to be a better ball player then Stevie, (and thats saying something), and Stevie's engine is relentless. Harry Kewell had his best game in well over a year for us, some of his through balls were not done justice by the strikers mistimed runs and failure to beat the offside trap. Alas Steve Finnan appears to be treading water, but the prospect of him being replaced by another Spanish Rafa signing, Nunez makes the imiganition run wild.
In front of the engine room, the touches and skill of "Super Lu" was only outdone by his tremendous workrate and endevour to win tackles and regain possesion. The link man is a difficult position to fulfil, but Garcia does it with such grace, I remember remarking to one of the lads after seeing his picture on a programme that he looks class, even without moving he looks like a proper star. This lad really excites me.
Cisse up front was tireless in his running, and his goal was despatched with venom. He looks like he is going to be tremendous, at last a Houllier signing of the last three years living up to the hype. Milan deserves a mention, he actually lifted his head up when he had the ball. Seriously though, great goal and much deserved, the kind of selection problem you want your manager to have over which two of three in form strikers to select. Warnock also proved again he is going to be an excellent player in the future, the tackles the young lads throw in, showing no consideration whatsoever for reputations are great and really get the crowd buzzin.
When the game was finished, walking out the ground it was great to see smiling faces, and hear and feel the buzz in the air walking back down the 'alfy. Long time since its been like that.
The forum has been buzzing, loads of new members and loads of really optomistic posts about the next game, the season and the future. Some will think its a bit much after one game, but to see football played to such a high level, passing and moving (its the Liverpool groove after all) and to hear the buzz in work, on talksport and on the legends phone in only bodes well.
The rafalution is here.
PS Hustler dont start, I didn't say Hyypia was as good as Hansen or that Alonso was better than Terry Mc, its just poetic licence and optomism getting the better of me. Funny thing that optomism, maybe you should try it some time....
JUSTICE FOR THE 96
