It's hard to compare what with inflation...

But He did sign Peter Thompson in 1963 for £37,000 which was a record at the time

I really want Abramovich to get locked up and have his assets frozen, the seedy Russian drug-pusher.

I wish i was a scruffy tw*t if it meant me having a few billion in the bank  :D

Adjusting for time and value of money, LFC have spent around £332.5m (today's value equivalent) in the last 47 years, which sort of proves the point that what's going on at Chelsea is vulger and a total distortion of the market.

It is funny but I get the feeling every big club is waiting for Chelsea to end their buying for the summer before they pursue their targets.

StMike, Can you not do one of these things for Manchester United and see how much they've spent over the course of the past 40-50 years? I'd like to see this becoz many Mancs believe we bought way to success during the 70's n 80's.

I don't think it's so much that as the fact that Chelsea can simply afford to buy players at the start of the summer.  If you think about it, it is unusual for top clubs to go out and make all their buys at the start of the summer and the reason for this is wages.  Especially for the top clubs who are going to be buying top players on pretty high wages, it simply doesn't make financial sense to be paying them for an extra 2 months when they are either on holiday or world cup duty.  Of course this doesn't matter to Chelsea though - five signings already spending over 50 million and two of those - Shevchenko and Ballack are on over a hundred grand a week.  By my calculations Chelsea will have paid a total of over 2 million in wages to these 2 guys alone before they've even kicked a ball for them.  Crazy or what?

Apart from Veron and Ferdinand (sort of), the mancs have bought  all their players at a sensible price

Yeah, Liverpool have broken the British transfer record many times (Dalglish, Barnes, Collymore for example), but always money that we earnt. I don't have a problem with that, just as I don't have a problem with Man Utd spending £25m on Rooney, £30m on Ferdinand etc.

But I thought that new players cannot register with their new clubs until July 1st?  If that's the case wouldn't wages only start being paid after July 1st irrespective of when a player signed the contract?

I quote the original post from St Michael.

Those figures are misleading to say the least. I bring to all of your attention the following points which are key:

1. The table says "since 1959" for LFC, and have let many players go since then. Wheras Chelsea's spending has been within the past 3 seasons mainly.

2. LFC are 70m in debt, and are paying for players "over 5 years", so cash will surely come to a halt as they try to catch chelsea. we are probably still paying for players bought under houllier (ie: diouf, Heskey, kewell, cisse etc).

3. They still need to find over 100m for a new stadium, having had planning permission for 12 months, and stanley park has not been touched, or a brick laid! where from comes the cash for that? more borrowing.

4. LFC Directors have to sell shares to raise more money. but a lot of the proceeds from that will pay off debts i guess.

5. Rafa thinks we can win the league on the cheap, wheras I dont! with quality players, comes consistency, hence 2 league titles on the trot for chelsea.

6. Houllier bought loads of duds with his 100m+ cash, and LFC is probably still paying for most of those.

7. Chelsea with their money, are buying the cream of the crop in Europe with their cash and spending it wisely, wheras Rafa is speculating with LFC cash and buying "players for the future" , which is risky.

8. I dont think we can win the league with chelsea in the way, unfortunately, and those who think we can are dreamers.

9. LFC have to be as good this season, as last, and that is a big ask.

I made a point once that there are players you can buy out there who will overnight turn you into a title winning side, it just has to be the right quality.

A lot of fans have been scathing at times over the past few years having a dig at players like Heskey, Diao, Diouf, Murphy, Cisse, Kewell, Moreintes, Smicer etc. This is because they are not the players to take us to the next level, wheras your Schevchenkos, Ballacks, Essiens, Makalele's etc indeed are!

It's up to Rafa to bring the right quality in, no one else.

Chelsea last season bought Essien,SWP,Del Horno £60million+ in total and had a worse season than season before. In my view these were quality signings that would have got more than a game or two for Liverpool yet none of them were what I would judge as a success for Chelsea.Shevchenko, Ballack Kalou and Michels cost £60million+ who's to say they will fair any better. Many of the players that tried so hard when they won their first EPL for Chelsea two years ago will be annoyed upset and looking to move as their first team chances dry up. Some will stay for the money im sure, but will they have the right motivation if and when called into action. Gallas and Crespo are already reaching for the exit door,SWP and Robben dont sound too happy and could be next if you believe the papers. Abramovich has given Chelsea a great ride up but I think there will be a lot of blood and tears on the way down. Personally I cant wait :D
