Also keep in mind that ESPN has picked up the Setanta Premiership matches, now what they do with them remains to be seen, but I think if shown over here, that will be a big boost financially.  It won't happen overnight but down the road, it could be a tremendous asset.  ESPN has a huge influence on what sports do well in the US and where those precious advertising dollars go.  Take the NHL for instance.  The height of the NHL's popularity was when ESPN was broadcasting both NHL regular season and playoff games.  After the NHL lockout, the NHL and ESPN, did not renew their contract.  The NHL has suffered in the popularity area tremendously.

I'm in no way saying that the Premier League needs US viewers, but really, over here we remain an untapped resource and for a country this size and as Sports Mad as we are over here, it's a resource that needs to be looked into.

I hear you loud and clear pal... Besides Tv rights and merchandise though, i think sponsorship deals, and image rights are massively undervalued in football today... If looked into more seriously, all of those things combined could lead to huge added income to top football clubs like Liverpool... Definitely a step forward imo...
If you look at the NFL and the money it brings in from TV rights... absolutely ridiculous... im sure the premier league attracts way more vieweres worldwide than the NFL does... but still the tv rights money doesnt reflect that...Contracts, Ads...etc etc... alot of potential (in terms of money) unfulfilled in football atm..

not a bit, particularly for the casual fans (who we are hoping to attract) they couldn't give a :censored: who owned the teams.

I am stunned at the small viewing figures for Tennis and Golf in America.
Only 9 million tune in to watch the final, bloody hell that means that 290 million people missed the best final tennis has ever seen (Wimbledon last year).
I would have certainly thought the Ryder cup had more viewers, is golf not very popular in the states any more?

Really?? I thought you guys were very patriotic, if there was a team owned by Norwegians I would be more inclined to take an interest in them, well except for Wimbledon of course but then that was the time they got relegated and I am of course a glory hunter.  :D

what brings down the Ryder Cup numbers somewhat is that its an average of the three days, and most of the first day while people are at work.

Tennis isn't that popular and Wimbledon starts early in the morning, but I certainly watched it, and thought it was brilliant.

But I watched every other thing on there. :D

Its also important to keep in mind that the superbowl number was 97, that is pretty much the highest number you could possibly see for any single television event in America. So even though we have 300 million people in the country, the biggest event in the country shown at one of the most optimum viewing times with a rich history and deep tie to the culture still couldn't get 100.

Patriotism for your country is one thing.  Such as supporting your national team.  As far as Supporting a Football Club on another continent just because a couple of billionaires bought a new plaything, definitely not.

golf numbers in America are completely tied to whether or not Tiger Woods is in the running.  Those US Open numbers where Tiger won would have been much higher if it weren't for the fact that the Monday ratings are part of the numbers, bringing the average down.

Another thing that brings golf numbers down, is, golf.  If the weather is decent out, go to pretty much any golf course and it'll be packed with the people most likely to watch it on tv.

 Xabi has been kickin off about the noise , got a point though it got on my nerves watching it on the telly . must of been doing there heads in on the pitch,

Liverpool star Xabi Alonso has got caught up in a huge row in South Africa after trying to get the country's traditional 'vuvuzela' horns banned at the World Cup. Alonso, whose Spain side were shocked by USA in the Confederations Cup on Wednesday, reckons the horns make an awful din and says players hate them.He called them 'annoying' and asked for FIFA to ban them at next year's World Cup Finals, but there has been a massive backlash.

Furious fans jammed radio phone-ins to complain and even FIFA president Sepp Blatter hit back - claiming the vuvuzela would give the World Cup a special African flavour.

Now South Africa's Daily Sun newspaper has launched a front-page campaign to prevent Alonso getting his way.

On Wednesday it printed a picture of the vuvuzela in its masthead and ran a front page leader blasting: "There's a vuvuzela with our Daily Sun today! It will stay there until the end of the World Cup. We are LOUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN! This is NOT a quiet place! Foreigners must just get used to it."

The news got even worse for Alonso when fans began writing in to criticise him.

One particularly angry supporter ranted: "Before taking a plane to South Africa, Alonso should have known where he was heading. People like him find it hard to accept anything done by Africans.

"His people, so-called conquistadors, have historically tortured and still racially abuse people of colour.

"Think of the monkey chants against Samuel Eto'o and other black players. In the World Cup he will have to dance to the tune of Africa. Vuvuzelas are here to stay, even beyond 2010."

Earlier Alonso had said: "Those African trumpets? They make a terrible noise. I don't think it's a very good idea to have them on sale outside the grounds.

"Here's a piece of advice for FIFA - they should try to ban those things. It's not nice to have that noise because it's annoying."

Dutch and German television companies also made official complaints about the racket made by 50,000 fans blowing their vuvuzelas at each match while BBC commentator Lee Dixon described them as "annoying." But FIFA and World Cup organisers are adamant they will stay.
