its the only written headline to make the fold, plus a picture. And its just the confederations cup semi-final that took place while most people were at work

They dont have to play a stupid 3/4th place play off do they.

they do but I wouldn't expect Torres or ALonso to play. Probably no Riera. WOuld expect Arbeloa and Reina though.

This could be a very good result for everyone involved in football all around the world... if the Americans get a little more involved in the game i'd expect a whole lot of money to be injected in the industry through merchandise, commercial and other business activities... good stuff

Also keep in mind that ESPN has picked up the Setanta Premiership matches, now what they do with them remains to be seen, but I think if shown over here, that will be a big boost financially.  It won't happen overnight but down the road, it could be a tremendous asset.  ESPN has a huge influence on what sports do well in the US and where those precious advertising dollars go.  Take the NHL for instance.  The height of the NHL's popularity was when ESPN was broadcasting both NHL regular season and playoff games.  After the NHL lockout, the NHL and ESPN, did not renew their contract.  The NHL has suffered in the popularity area tremendously.

I'm in no way saying that the Premier League needs US viewers, but really, over here we remain an untapped resource and for a country this size and as Sports Mad as we are over here, it's a resource that needs to be looked into.

A friend of mine works at ESPN and they are exploring options, could even be a "Game Plan" type thing.  ESPN are looking to play hardball with Fox after losing the Champions League.

ESPN have picked up the matches that Setanta would of broadcasted next season so mainly the saturday evening games and the odd monday night games .

As good as the win was for USA last night it will still not be anywhere  near as popular as  American Football,Baseball,Ice Hockey,Basketball,Nascar,Golf and Indy Car .

It's really regional as far as popularity goes.  I mean, other than the Indy 500 are there any other races?  I'm sure someone in California or someone in the south would ask me if I was on crack for asking that.  At the same time, they wouldn't know why a ref would blow his whistle when a hockey player went offside, and I'd think they were on Meth.  It all depends on what your interests are and where you are.  That said, exposure on ESPN has never hurt a sport here.

NFL, and Baseball definitely, Nascar is a once per week event, Basketball does marginally well (nothing like it did when Jordan and Bird were playing), Hockey's #'s were very similar, if not behind the Champions League matches, and those are midweek and in the afternoon here.  Hockey's #'s are :censored: though. LOL, I'd think Saturday evening matches (would be afternoon here) would do fair in January-May.  Hockey and basketball are mostly evening games.
