It is impossible to call who we will buy in the summer but we all are very clear of the positions where we are weak. One major problem this summer is inflated transfers after Euro 2008.
for all the people suggesting names and signings this is a wake up call, please read this analysis carefully and realise it's not so simple.
i've done an analysis on all players LFC have signed from Premier League clubs in the last 10-12 years
Yossi Benayoun 5m
Jermaine Pennant 6.7m
Craig Bellamy 6m
Peter Crouch 7m
Steve Finnan 3.5m
Harry Kewell 5m
Abel Xavier 750k
Chris Kirkland 6m
Daniel Sjolund 1m
Nick Barmby 6m
Stephane Henchoz 3.5m
Dietmar Hamann 8m
Emile Heskey 11m
that's about £70m worth of 'Premier League proven' talent (5.4m average)
5 are still with us (none of whom have consistently made the starting line up), of the 8 no longer with us Hamann and Henchoz (7 years and 5 years) were the longest servants but the average premier league proooven talent is committed to Anfield for around 3 seasons
now I know we've had some shocking imports in that time as well but our hit rate from buying players from other Premier League teams is generally not good, basically i'd say 1 in 7, that is we buy 7 players until we have a successful signing from another prem team that has a lasting and long impact, meaning it has cost us £35m to strike gold each time (and both were defensive players).
infact, looking through the list of players we have never signed one decent, successful, lasting attacking player from a premier league club in 15+ years, Stan Collymore 8.5m from Forest lasted 2 years.
Our best attacking players either came through the academy or were bought and sourced abroad, though obviously there were a high number of failures there too.
I think we ought to learn from our past mistakes otherwise we're doomed to repeat them, if we do sign a so called attacking player from a Premier League club it could be very costly.
Everyone thinks they're a transfer expert or have an eye for a bargain but have a look through our sorry history of transfers in the Premier League era and you quickly realise how difficult it has been for us, especially when buying from other Premier League clubs.
This is no slight on the good natured posters on here who I love to read and debate with, our own highly paid manager, scouts etc. have regularly wasted vast sums of money and club resources over the years thinking they found a domestic bargain , particularly annoying is the dross we acquire from relegated clubs.
I would also add attacking players are a particular problem and require the deepest scrutiny, debate and analysis, undoubtedly for me the best in numerous years have been Torres, Garcia and um, THAT's it.. too early to judge Babel though as a Liverpool attacking signing in recent years to score 8 goals is considered a massive achievement
the lesson is.... if we want to sign an attacking player he has to be deemed really special and well above average or he is doomed to failure and we're wasting serious money (we need to stop making several 5-10m purchases and just go for the blow out quality because not doing so costs us that anyway and probably much more), if you want to sign any old player from a premier league club there is probably a 15% chance that they will be a long and lasting success.
so think carefully about that next time you think such and such would be a bargain or well worth the x million pounds, the likelyhood is they will NEVER be.
what would be the best advice? just buy players from abroad, yes there's failures but there's also a lot of success and in attacking terms, a few successes
