Manager seemed to have lost the plot 2002/2003, Manager may have lost the plot 2007/2008 ?

Coach left in 2002/2003 - Patrice Burges
Assistant Manager left in 2007 Paco (Thommo was assistant in 2002-2003 and nave left)

After 8 games 2002-2003 - 18 points
After 8 games 2007-2008 - 16 points (thus not the same)

Played poorly but got results 2002-2003 - wrong, we went WWDDDWWWWWWW until our first loss in the league, then it was LDLLLLDDDLD so after the good start we never played poorly and got results, we where awful.

Manager seems to have lost the plot ? How has Rafa lost the plot please ? The teams form has dipped.

Also the home defeat to Marseille 0-1 has echoes of the home defeat to Valencia 0-1. We could also have mentioned the 2 draws against Basle, and the fact we didn't qualify from the group stages of the CL.

Surprisingly both seasons also started off with a first league game away to Villa, both wins as well.

To a point I agree but its not just rotation, it would appear that it doesnt take much for people to argue and resort to petty comments. How about an ideas thread? one where everyone gets involved with what is being portrayed and a total new structure? As in an ARGUMENTS one, where if your looking for an argument you know where to go. PEACE if you want flower power here is what ya want. NOSTALGIA all kia ora ads here.

Just an idea mind....

Im guessing that its because Torres was rested in the match before and therefore, as quoted by rafa, he is keeping the players fresh as in rested for matches without tiring them.

I guess he was rested because he had played in the last few games, and for Spain before that. As Rafa said he also believed (rightly or wrongly) that Torres would be ineffectual against Birmingham, and he was poor against Porto 4 days earlier. Finally maybe Rafa thought that the team he had in mind would be more than good enough to win.

I suppose the previous three results pressured Rafa into playing Torres against Reading. Thats my take on it.

Maybe he saw the similarities to 2002/2003 and thought he had better win the league cup same as Houllier did   :D

The juvenile name calling has now been deleted so we can get back to discussing rotation.

My answer to your question Dawson: Rafa would have had no intention of starting Torres for the Carling Cup had it not been for the poor results over the course of the preceding week.  I think he wanted to play a stronger team at Reading to get some positive momentum going.  It seemed to do so, as we managed a win at Wigan right after as well.  Unfortunately, we then get derailed by Marseilles.

You're right, mate--I haven't included a change in position as part of my assessment of "unforced" changes.

sorry, I was typin the post I made from about 7pm in between watchign hte rugby and the match, so didnt know you had posted this. I will move the thread or merge it in a bit.

HOWEVER - How can you count changes made either side of a dead rubber game (Toulouse) and the Carling cup game in your comparrison ?

EDIT - 28 changes came around these two games, I have just checked.

Believe me, mate, I hear what you're saying about what changes to count but I thought I'd just put down the raw numbers and let people interpret them as they will.  Some people, for instance, feel that swapping that many players from match to match--regardless of the competition or the significance of the match--disrupts the team's cohesiveness.  Others fully support Rafa using the whole squad for cup matches.

FWIW, in addition to the questions you've raised, I think that counting the changes between the Derby game and the Portsmouth game is ridiculous, since there was a two-week international break in between.

Do you blame the manager completely for the run of results ?
