The poisoned chalice - The league....

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby hello_red » Sat Mar 15, 2008 3:04 pm

Well im not gonna ramble on but I just want to see what people think about the 18 year gap being a poisin chalice?

W are in the midst of a very turbulent time for Liverpool off the field! Change is always tough for anyone or thing, so hopefully it will get put to bed soon.

Anyway.

I feel that the fact we have not won the league in so long makes us desperate for the prem, but desperate people do stupid things like want Rafa sacked or certain plyers thrown out of the team when all they need to do is win a few more games. We have won 15 (hopefully 16 by end of today), drawn 11 and lost 3. We win 4 of those draws and we are 2 points ahead of Arsenal, now to me thats a massive improvement from where we where a few years ago. And its down to Rafa and the signings hes made!
A maager is judged by his wins and signings and to me Rafa cant be faulted, yes there is the annoying aspect of rotation but thats null and void in this argument.

What im asking is are we to quick to judge a man that has brought back serious silverware and the name of Liverpool Fc back to the thoughts of some of the best players in the world?

Sustaining challenges in Europe and beating the best teams in Europe makes perople look and think 'maybe i should play for them'. That makes our squad better and as a result makes the league much more obtainable and sustainable.

Im obviously pro-Rafa or if you must rose tinted, but I find it so sad that I would be called this! I support our team and want success and I see Rafa bringing it all back and people want rid becasue he hasnt delivered the league yet!

We have been in wonderland  for years and now Rafa is guiding us back to the top of the mountain.

So is the league our poisin chalice?

The solution is simple really.

Rafa stays but for :censored: sake give us a :censored: load more money so we can buy a squad capable of challanging for more than just half a season.

Im not sure i know what you mean but if you consider the side he took over you may say it was full of internationals but come on it wernt great, no better imo than the bitters are now and if you was to give them the same time and money Rafa`s had over 4 years how much do you recon they`d win? not much because as ever the other ( better ) sides are improving at the same or at a greater rate and bearing that in mind i think Rafa`s doing a good job, if you havent got 100m to spend in a few consecutive windows it takes time you have to constantly try and improve the first team so you dont lose more ground while building for the future with youth, imho Rafa is doing this very well our team is much improved and most of it young players, world class talent i might add that could be with us for years. Add to this a very good youth set up, consecutive FA cup winners and you only have to look at the reserves to see the change, the way everything is set up for future success no more is it full of expensive flops going though the motions happy to pick up their cheque now its made up of hungry and very talented youth who play agaist mostly established prem players week in week out and have totally sh!t on em and ran away with the division.

Valid points there mate - there are international players and there are players of an international standard and then there are proper world class players.  I reckon we've got truly world class players in Torres, Gerrard, Carra and Reina - a spine that is the equal of any team in the World.  Just add to them:

* the players of real quality that we've got,
* new quality signings (maybe one world class - money permitting)
* quality reserves and youth coming through
* Rafa
* our history and
* our famous fans

well the juggernaut that is Liverpool FC is picking up speed.

Just one note... the youth setup, the reserves etc does any credit go to Houllier do you think?  I don't know myself but I do remember what he did for the French set up before he joined us and then they won the World & European Cups.

Yeh its a poison chalice alright... how could it not be with our record?  Its shocking to think how long we've gone without being the champions.

Next season... its ours  :nod

We have been saying that since Rafas first season. Its all good in theory but we need to spend a lot to get those few more decent players needed to play with out teams spine.

I'm really not that sure that we do need to spend much more money. I feel that this side is well capable. It just needed to gel. Maybe one or two class signings and we're there. Our problems are not as deep as some have suggested. Perhaps one quality wide man and another striker. That's it. To sack Rafa would be absolute madness.

Yeh Bav that's a good point and I thought we had a decent spine then too but how wrong I was.  Still it was strong enough to win the Champions League so it can't have been that bad.

We're so close mate, I can feel it... Reina/Torres v Dudek/Baros  ???  world class v international class

Its a shame we couldnt be more consistent this season. Who would have thought that Torres would be scoring for fun in his 1st season.

A few weeks ago we were 20 points behind the leaders.

Now it's down to 8

Shame about those draws. Otherwise we'd win the flin flarn title.

i feel if we stick to this formation and we should all we need is a quality winger/forward and a quality full back and were set for next season

forget next year, this year is ours. we'll win the league and me heart will believe this until it's mathamatically impossible.
1) You'll Never Walk Alone
2) pass and move is the Liverpool groove
3) FIRST WILL ALWAYS BE FIRST AND SECOND WILL ALWAYS BE NOTHING.
4) If Torres has scored 60 league goals for Liverpool by the start of the 2011/12 season, I'll say he's better than Owen.
