THE MICHAEL OWEN THREAD - all owen talk here from now on please

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Toon boss Graeme Souness is wagging his tail and foaming at the mouth about the prospect of Michael Owen joining his Newcastle army, despite concerns that Owen’s heart isn’t Newcastle Brown.

“I don’t think it will take Michael long to enjoy life at the club. We have a lot of wonderful and ancient history here, and he’ll be partnering it upfront most weeks.”

“Michael just wants to score goals week in and week out and training with our defenders should certainly see to that.”

Well we will know by the end of today.

Newcastle chief in Owen ultimatum

Newcastle have given England striker Michael Owen, 25, until the end of Thursday to decide if he wants to join.

The Magpies agreed a club record fee of around £17m with Real Madrid for the England star on Wednesday but Owen is known to prefer a return to Liverpool.

"There is not much more we can do. We are waiting to hear from Owen and his adviser," Shepherd explained.

"But it has to happen today or it's not going to happen at all, and we will be speaking to Michael's people."

BBC Sport understands Liverpool are not willing to pay more than the £8m Real splashed out to land Owen last summer.

They are expected to reveal their hand after Friday's Super Cup game with CSKA Moscow on Friday but the player would have to take a pay cut to persuade Liverpool to do business.

Owen said on Wednesday that if he could not move back to Anfield, he would consider a loan switch to St James' Park

But Newcastle manager Graeme Souness is only interested in a permanent deal, saying: "The loan is not an option, not a chance.

"Not when we've made a whacking great offer for him that's been accepted."

And Shepherd added: "Real Madrid will not allow Owen to go out on loan but that is something between them and the player but I am sure that a compromise can be reached."

Its looking good :buttrock
Rick Parry just on SSN, basically saying he and Rafa have the same opinion on Owen, and let's "wait and see"... he also said "when the day comes"- which suggest we're nearly there. :)

Saturday all will be revealed I should imagine, and I have a feeling Cisse will be sold or loaned out. Then Gerrard was interviewed and give a cheeky grin again when asked about him coming back, and said I love Michael Owen, he would make any team stronger, but its up to Benitez.

PARRY DROPS OWEN HINTS
by Adam Marshall -  created on 25 Aug 2005

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry has hinted that Liverpool could make their move for Michael Owen before the transfer deadline on August 31.

As Newcastle United supremo Freddy Shepherd concedes the England international will not be heading for Tyneside unless a deal is wrapped up on Thursday, which is looking increasingly unlikely, a return to Anfield could be the likeliest solution.

Despite constant denials from Rafa Benitez, who wants a centre back and wide midfielder before looking at his forward line, it is believed that the Merseysiders are biding their time before weighing up a move for the Real Madrid striker.

"Wait and see," Parry told Sky Sports News. "Absolutely [it's all I can say].

"There's been far too much speculation on it already.

"Let's just rely on facts and we'll see when we get to that day [next Wednesday's deadline].

"I don't [want to comment on my feelings on bringing him back]. My personal feelings do not have anything to do with it.

"One myth that can be dispelled is there's never been a difference of opinion between Rafa and me. We're just keeping our counsel.

"There's some work to do and it's a few days before the deadline so we'll see."

Steven Gerrard has reiterated his desire to link up again with his international colleague.

"There's been a lot of speculation and a lot of people are asking me the question but it's a question only the Liverpool manager can answer," asserted Gerrard on Sky Sports News.

"I've said what I think about the situation. I love Michael as a player; I think any team with him is always going to be stronger but Rafa Benitez is the only man who knows whether he wants Michael back so we're going to have to wait and see."

Gerrard will not be risked in Friday's European Super Cup clash with CSKA Moscow.

"It's very doubtful for tomorrow night," he stated. "It's a very nice game to play in but, with all due respect, it's not a very important one.

"I've got two important internationals coming up so I want to give myself the best chance to be fit for those games so I won't be taking any risks tomorrow night."

Newcastle could be turning to Deportivo La Coruna forward Albert Luque as an option with the Owen deal in the balance.
