It's been a bit stressed on this site lately, so I have been looking through some of my old cuttings on Liverpool players from the past and their memories of Shanks.
I don't know how many of you will remember a left back called Alec Lindsay, who we signed from Bury quite a few years ago.
Anyway, Alec was very nervous making his debut at Anfield and was visibly shaking in the tunnel before the teams came out. Bill Shankly saw his situation, went up to Alec and put his arm around him, saying, 'Don't worry lad when you get the ball I want you to beat a couple of players and smash the ball into the net the way you used to at Bury'.
Lindsay scratched his head and said, 'But boss, that wasn't me it was Bobby Kerr!'
Shankly turned to Bob Paisley and said, 'Christ Bob we've signed the wrong player!'
The ice was broken the tension melted away and everyone laughed. Alec went on to play play many great games for the reds. Shanks eh!
